Normally when I’m out my country walk I do a bit of bird watching, the distant call of the cuckoo, the songthrush that could record an album of its incredible variety of calls, the drilling of the Keith Moon of the bird world, the woodpecker, but in recent weeks I’ve stared up at the sky in wonderment at a rare sight.  An aeroplane!  Anyone else now find themselves watching a plane fly?

We get the RAF practising up and down the valleys on nice days so often have them flying really low overhead

Right, I may as well confess it now. One of my mates sister's (one of whom I actually ended up marrying) used to work in a theatre in Birmingham where there were regular ballet performances. Anyway, word got out at our secondary school (for this took place way back then) that my mate had got a shed load of free tickets for a matinee performance of a ballet, which his sister had got for him. Not only that, but somehow word had got out that this was no ordinary ballet, but that the women were to dance topless during the performance. The net result was that a huge gaggle of 14 year old boys turned up to watch the opera in a virtually empty theatre. The performers were probably wondering why such a huge mob of adolescent boys had turned up to watch them. We were just wondering at what point they were going to get their baps out. As the performance went on, it dawned on us one by one that we'd been had in the bag, and there wasn't going to be the much sought after sighting of a pair of tits in the flesh.

 love this

I don't know why, but that bit of information was really interesting. I had no idea such an app existed. That said, if I now turn in to a plane spotter, I'll never forgive you!

Been following this guy delivering PPE & medical supplies. It was out of service for a while but now back in business.

I would love to see one now it’s flying again. Closest thing I’ve seen or been in would be a C-5 Galaxy, 747-8 or A380. This dwarfs them. On it’s way to Montreal to refuel as we speak.

That would be amazing. Seen a few Hawk trainers, Tornado’s before they went out of service & the odd Typhoon do the runs in Wales. Some as far down as Pembrokeshire at a music festival. Amazing sights. Sometimes we get lucky with a Typhoon down here but it’s blink & you’ll miss it stuff.

I was lucky enough to see the last Condcorde flight & a more recent one of the Spitfire that left to circum-navigated the world.

Very appropriate since I started this ballet discussion with a comment about the various birds of an ornithological nature!

My old uni-flatmate was the UK’s 2nd top ornithologist for a while. He showed me the ranking system based on how many birds they had seen. He was a virgin.

Good news here in Canada. One of our experts has said the chance of catching the virus outdoors is extremely small, so most of the parks and trails have reopened with social distancing measures still in effect. It does mean we will likely be able to do camping and swimming on the beach in the summer which is great news.

I've just had to look up for some photos of that Antonov An-225 Mriya to get some idea of it's scale. It is a beast, and there's no denying that.

In terms of aircraft / unusual sights, way back in the 1983 I happened to leave my parents house to go in to the back garden, and saw nothing other than this flying at low level over me;

Space Shuttle over Birmingham

It was one of the space shuttles fixed on to the back of a plane. It had obviously just taken off from Birmingham airport. What exactly it had been doing there in the first place I simply don't know. Normally Birmingham airport is used by the good burghers of Birmingham to escape the place! It is unfathomable to the Brummie mind why anybody not from the city would want to fly in to it. lol

It is amazing, but it can get a bit annoying when it's multiple times a day. And it's always on the nicest days. I live on the banks of Windermere so you see and hear them coming from miles away as they fly up the lake

Wow that is a very rare spot! Never see that again. Off the top of my head BHX can certainly deal with this type of aircraft if it was stopping for a refuel after picking up the Space Shuttle landing in Europe before final leg to Kennedy. I would have thought Brize Norton would be the defacto stop over but there you go!

I was very lucky in my childhood to witness a Shuttle launch at Cape Canaveral. Perhaps too young too appreciate. The noise from miles away with ear defenders was intense, my parents have it on Hi-8 tape somewhere still, I must find it.

I like how they modified the tailerons of the 747 to accommodate the Space Shuttle.

Ahh wow! I’ve seen a few videos of them ‘gun running’ through the hills & a few shots where you can see the pilots waving back. Mad!

Have there been cases where a few house windows have been shattered?

The bears are going to be extra dangerous as they haven't tasted human flesh in months.

A fair number of years ago I was looking for truly odour proof sealable plastic bags (not every plastic bag that claims to be odour proof actually is). Anyway, the reason that I was doing this was to ensure that I could get my drugs in to the Glastonbury festival (and other festivals) without attracting the attention of any sniffer dogs. My research led me to the LOKSAK OPSAK bag. Apparently these are used by campers in the USA and your country. They are used as such because people put food in to them and bears can't smell that food. Now a bears sense of smell can be up to 7 times greater than that of a blood hound, so I knew that I'd found what I needed.

Anyway, I only mention the above because it had a Glastonbury / bear element to it.

Oh man, you saw a shuttle launch. Now that must have been spectacular.

As an aside - given their knowledge, technology, prowess in space etc, do you really think that they needed to state 'NOTE - BLACK SIDE DOWN' in that last photo! lol

I was a very lucky as a kid, my mom took me to lots of places as she was a steward. Unfortunately lots of the places I was fortunate enough to visit I was perhaps too young, that particular trip was to Disney/Orlando (shit hole). Fortunately I revisited lots of these places as an adult working for their rival British airline.

I’m hoping black side down is just banter? But then again they are American.

edit: If I can I will try & find the video & somehow digitise it.

I've never been to the States. I've never been interested in going, and in addition I have managed to make myself persona non grata in any case. I must say though that the idea of going to Disney/Orlando is fairly akin to my views on what hell would be like - if such a place existed.

I’m not a big fan of USA. You aren’t missing out on much East & West coasts, I’ve never flown to the middle bits except a stopover in Atlanta to Nicaragua. Orlando is a hell hole, I was there for Black Friday once, our hotel was above a mall, the security were armed for what I can only describe as the closest thing I’ve witnessed to a zombie apocalypse.

I do like Boston & San Francisco but plenty of other places would be higher on my to go to list... anywhere in CANADA.
