Lots of thanks to everyone on this thread - what with watching CNN nearly non stop since Tuesday evening and reading all the posts on here it’s been the best distraction from Covid since March! We may finally be on the long trudge back to a less s**t world

What's a runoff election?

They're second elections held if no candidate in the first election receives a majority of the votes. The two candidates with the most votes qualify for the runoff.

Why did it happen?

Georgia requires the winner get at least 50% of the vote. In this year's election, none of Georgia's candidates got that many votes.

Sen. Kelly Loeffler, the Republican incumbent, and Democratic challenger Raphael Warnock are set to face off again, as are for Sen. David Perdue, the Republican incumbent, and Democratic challenger Jon Ossoff in their race. 
For Ossoff, it’s a bookend to the start of Trump’s tenure, when he ran for a suburban Atlanta House seat that became the most expensive congressional race in U.S. history to that point. He lost. Warnock, meanwhile, is making his first bid for public office.

It would be a lot cheaper and quicker to have a second preference.

Back to counting the votes - will news outlets wait to project Georgia until the recount? Or will they project it once enough votes are in regardless?

Once that gets called, and assuming AZ holds, Trump’s rants are going to lose whatever 0.01% credibility they have.

I just read through replies to those tweets and surprisingly they were overwhelmingly taking the piss of him. I thought his supporters would be there in full force defending him. Some are, but the majority are piling on him. 

Republicans really need to reign him in or cut ties with him. This will start to damage their support from the swing voters the longer it goes on. I dunno if they do opinion polls so soon after an election, but it’d be interesting to track his polling figures from today onwards if he keeps refusing to accept the result.
