The only one I don't really get still being here (and on a decent points total) is R.E.M.

I don't dislike them massively, I just "nothing" them. Barring about 4-5 decent songs, aren't they a little bit........bland?

It is within your power to do something about it.

The Cure - 320

Radiohead - 85

Stevie Wonder - 240

R.E.M - 230 (-10)

David Bowie - 290

Too busy trying valiantly to keep Radiohead going atm. Should they fall, my attentions will turn to Stipe and co.

Stipe was one helluva performer during those 99, 03 and 05 tours. And those shows were quite something. At one point they were one of the biggest bands on the planet too. People seem to forget about that.

I'm curious about what you think the 4-5 decent songs are. I find it hard to narrow down their best songs down to a top 20-30. They have one hell of a catalogue to dive into. (Album-wise, Life's Rich Pageant and New Adventures In Hi-Fi are my favs btw).

(Still no Radiohead though, but who is.)

I remember someone making a good point on these boards (yes, really!) years ago. They said that REM were basically 'victims' of their own genuine-ness (new word). If they had pretended to split up then come back a few years later, they would have been huge again But because they refused to play that game, they just seemed to peter out a bit.

I'm sure they are nice blokes. Also recall that one of the times they headlined, they caught the train to the festival (from Bath, I think) and were chatting to their fans en route.

Much like Radiohead, I can't think of many acts that make music that sounds like REM. Although there's nothing new under the sun, both bands are unique compared to their contemporaries and that's what makes them great

Plus their version of It's The End Of The World... that year was celebratory chaos, Mike Mills roaming the front barrier as Stipe went bananas and even led the crowd through the chorus acapella once the sound was shut off. They felt like one of the first major American rock superstars who really truly got it.

This! That song was utterly, utterly wonderful. I was in floods of happy tears.

Yeah, they seemed to completely fall in love with the place the first time they played and totally understood it.
