Why do we think Glastonbury choose to announce their lineup the way they do.

I hear that they want those big names in place for the first poster but when most major to mid festivals have announced the bulk of their lineups between Decemeber - March and given that Glastonbury has more artists to announce than most other festivals. I would assume that most artists are locked in, hell if theyve committed to playing a 10 to 30 thousand capacity fest you would think they're also committed to the big G at that time.

Simple as acts don’t get paid a lot for playing at Glastonbury. A lot of the time acts have either their own tours to sell tickets for or will be playing other festivals for a lot higher price.

by announcing most of the acts after tickets have sold they don’t affect sales for the other events the act might be playing at. Other festivals get first dibs on announcements to allow them to sell more tickets. Glasto gets to pay a lot less for acts.

Interested in peoples opinions here.

Admittedly I am hell of impatient this year but with that has come a little frustration at how late we get names when they obviously have a lot of names they are just sitting on. With the exception of Boomtown going down the no lineup route I cant think of another festival that takes Glastonburys approach.

Apologies if I'm coming negative, I'll be bouncing off the walls again come the next announcement but genuinely interested in how other people feel about it.

Would anyone else like more fanfare of the headline announcement or use of other tactics, puzzles, guess the artists or even sending out leaks (a la Truck) for the undercard.

Fingers crossed tomorrow brings something....anything.

I think the thinking is that other festivals have to announce their line ups early to sell tickets, but Glastonbury doesn’t. Why would the artists then want it public that they’re playing Glastonbury when they hope you’ll buy tickets to their gig instead. It’s probably only a small perk for artists, but when the fees are small for Glastonbury, why not save it until later?

I think the announcments are fine. But if there was a least some structure to it that helps. If you gave us the Avalon tent, then you better follow it up the next week with something. Keeping things flowing is a good thing and doesnt stall momentum or excitement. If Silver Hayes does indeed announce tomorrow then thats great. If there is nothing til next week, they kinda wasted time. Unless theres 3 in a row or something.

They played in the Wow tent. I went straight from Arcade Fire to see them, then bailed halfway through to catch Aphex at the Temple. Cracking night, that was!

Edit: I'm an idiot and read this as Aphex Twin

I like the random nature of it.

I think thats it for me. The pacing of the announcements dont lend themselves to building excitement.

My wife whos coming with me (and loves the place) but doesnt view here, is completely non plussed about it.

Outside of this forum it's pretty barren and just seems weird for such a revered place with such a multitude of acts to share and when only 2 months from opening.

Give us some teases but deadlines and deliver on them....and never use the word 'soon'

Anyway....today right? RIGHT?

With Glastonbury, they're the only festival I know of that does line up releases in this way. That is yes, due to the size of the place and the differences between stages and areas but still the only one.

I would love for it to be 'every Tuesday at 1pm will be another poster' but I also love the idea of randomly getting a twitter notification from Glastonbury and having to find an excuse at work to go on a break at 1:52pm because the Theatre and Circus acts have been announced.

I'm in the same situation. Some sort of schedule would go a long way in helping me build a bit of excitement at home

The main problem for me with announcing the lineups with such delay is you don't get a proper chance to listen to some artists enough. It's a much better experience seeing an act when you are more familiar with their songs.

Then theres the disappointment that occurs when the stage times are announced and you realise that half of the people that you have familiarised yourself with clash with each other.

Having said the above...I love the festival and as long as I have a handful of acts to focus on then the rest tends to just fall into place and always have a good time...
