I guess my take that I Am Easy To Find is the best National album would also be highly controversial then!

My least favourite of theirs but easily still an 8/10 album

Rylan and Light Years are in my top 10 songs.

I rank Sleep Well Beast near the top so not too controversial.

Take out Turtleneck and it's a masterpiece.

Frank Turners latest album may be the greatest album I’ve ever heard.

I find Frank Turner’s lyrics painfully obvious. I like his music and he is clearly a very good guy, but fuck me, he doesn’t do allusion or metaphor very well.
He also comes across as a bit of a nerd who’s found themselves in the position of rock star. When he swears on stage he has the air of a naughty school boy who looks like they’re going to be found out for saying a bad word.

He's also a massive Tory isn't he? I've seen him a number of times, good music and energy but the lyrics are total cringe.

Frank Turner is from Buriton, which is possibly the poshest village ive ever wandered through - but his local pub do some excellent food. At least they did in 2014, when i walked the South Downs Way route.

This is nothing to do with nothing, just a bit of colour on ol' Frank really 😄 i dont have an opinion on his music or on him.

He's said he's a centrist. So, some people on here would say that makes him a Tory! 🙂

Fucking Labour. If you’re not left of Leon Trotsky you’re a Tory.
There’s a real sweet spot between The Sandinistas and Stalin that you have to be in to be considered proper Labour by some of the Momentum lot. You get the feeling someone like John McDonnell probably thinks Pol Pot actually had decent policies and just got a bit carried away.

It's something that I've thought about before as well, but personally I like the simplicity of Frank's lyrics. Yeah it's not necessarily going to translate well to a poetry jam or be analysed by A-Level English students, but they're relatable and have feeling behind them. There's times you want to pull apart the deeper meaning of a song, and times you just want to listen and sing along to something that describes how you feel at a given time.

Notes down next walking option....

I'm assuming they did a decent pie? 😉

He also said the BNP are a hard left party, so I dread to think what his idea of a centrist is...

Has he not read his own lyrics? 1933. Given the context at time of writing/release, presumably it’s about the rise of groups like the BNP and UKIP, polarising issues like Brexit and populist politicians like Trump and Johnson.
Yet he thinks the BNP is a leftist group despite writing a song bemoaning the parallels with 1930s fascism that calls out exactly their politics?
Is he thick?

I like a big chunk of Frank's stuff but can't argue much with the above.

Then again....I agree with the original post that the latest album is very good, it definitely won't completely dispense with your previous views, but worth a listen .

The album has however introduced me to Frightened Rabbit. How had I missed these before. I've been absolutely blown away by their music and Scott's lyrics.....wonderful and devastatingly sad at the same time

Thing with Frank I find is that all of his lyrics about how we should live a lovely rosey life free from the 9-5 culture is born out of his exceptional privilege. Just find it a bit disingenuous being told things like that by the Eton educated, son of a merchant banker.

Slightly misquoted I think. He clarified it by saying "Obviously I think the BNP are repugnant. They are a socially right wing racist party, but their economic policies are pretty authoritarian left wing. I oppose them strongly for both of those reasons."

I've never looked into the BNP's economic policy, as their racist views are enough to know never to vote for them, so I couldn't tell you whether he's correct or not.

That's a lot more than being "slightly" misquoted, to be fair. Have to think that anyone who reads that and takes "the BNP are left wing" out of it is seeing what they want to see.

That was the clarification that came after he got called out on it, this is the original quote:

"To start with, most people don't seem to understand what the difference between left and right is. For example, the BNP are a hard left party. I consider myself a libertarian, I consider myself to be pretty right wing and I get shit for saying that out loud. I was thinking about it the other day, I was thinking about how, quite often, I do keep myself to myself on the subject because I can't be fucking bothered to have some guy look all shocked at me because I think socialism's retarded."

Yeah, was just about to post the same thing. In fairness to him, the original quote was from 2009 and he's since said "my political views have changed massively since then".

despicably i didnt have the pie, i seem to recall having an improbably proportioned chicken and veggie kebab effort with rice, salad and chips. The great thing about walking the South Downs Way is being able to justify truly gargantuan meals every day! Id hugely recommend the whole route and finishing in Eastbourne, cos the change from countryside and rolling hills to cliffs and the seven sisters is breathtaking.

again, im very off topic 😜

You've changed 😄

We were over in Alfriston the other week, couple of very nice pubs down there. Seven Sisters / Seaford is always nice, but unfortunately didn't have time to make it over to check out the long man.

Given the state most threads end up in when they go off-topic, I think this is just fine!
