I am very curious to find out which human rights he would like to overhaul and why.

Using 'Strasbourg' as a reference to the ECHR is the same kind of xenophobia that equates 'Brussels' with the EU parliament and spreads the misapprehension that we are being governed by foreigners. It's a cheap, dishonest move. And it will likely work.

I think it's more the interpretation of the laws rather than the laws themselves - but these interpretations set precedents and becomes laws themselves.

Some of these judgements over the years have felt perverse and have done things like put the rights of the prisoners / offender above and beyond the rights of victims and the safety of the public.  Its all been very wooly and soft.

I don't think it's the big issue some of you guys think it will be.  Unless you care deeply about the right of a terrorist for example.  Personally I couldn't  give a shit about their rights.

Any good examples of these judgements?

I think saying that only terrorists are affected is massively disingenuous. The act protects us all, and the tories want to remove that protection.

An interesting article. But I don't agree with the central premise. I believe the vast majority of people who voted in favour of Brexit, will NEVER admit that it was a mistake. They will find other excuses for the shit situation, eg. The pandemic was the cause, the EU are still trying to shaft us, the current govt (be it Tory or maybe one day Labour) are the cause of it.

Maybe. I'm sure some will argue that this isn't what they voted for, this is not what they were promised etc. But, yeah, govt will try deflect any blame towards pandemic or EU or human rights or immigrants or whatever...and many brexit voters will happily go along with it.

while I agree we probably need to be registering for online social media with ID because its out of control (despite the scary prospects that brings in the wrong hands, would probably just make me drop all those things) I'd rather such laws were made by people who understand the landscape. Because this does not give me confidence that would be the case...

I feel it’s also a convenient distraction tactic from the organisations that should be looked into such as the Daily Mail with their month long attack against Drs as an example. The real problem is when well known people attack someone, have to apologise then face no repercussions for their actions.

It's implied that most abuse done online is by anonymous trolls, but Twitter found that 99% done to black English players after the Euros were not (https://blog.twitter.com/en_gb/topics/company/2020/combatting-online-racist-abuse-an-update-following-the-euros

So this social media ID thing is purely reactionary and will do nothing to combat actual abuse and hate.

I imagine the idea is it'll be a more all encompassing thing where you sign onto the Internet using an ID and can't access anything without it, perhaps the new gov app they announced last week. Everything  would be tracked presumably- can't see how that could go wrong at all...

Would need some massive changes and to outlaw VPNs and a million other things that just don't sound possible. Doesn't sound workable unless it was across the whole western world.

This reminds me of their proposals for porn IDs a few years ago that were written lightyears outside of the realms of reality. Unless they've got some people with actual technology knowledge I can't see this one getting off the ground either.

Especially if you've got MPs pretending they can get Zuckerberg in front of Parliament to drain the twitter swamp...

It won’t happen, like everything with this government they need to talk like they are going to take tough measures to cover up the fact that they don’t have a clue. Nothing will happen.
