Boris to say he's really sorry again but he really didn't know he was breaking rules and that there were all these other parties going on in the building where he both lives and works etc but...Ukraine needs him so he's staying..

Will that do? Obviously the Tories will forgive and forget but the opposition and general public are going to be tougher to convince.

It will be enough for tory MPs and that's all that matters for now...just have to see what happens in local elections and then polls after that..

I'm not sure, there'll be some who are up in arms because it's the tories doing something wrong and those at the other end solidly defending it, but imagine there a fair clump of people in the middle who don't think it's great, but not a deal breaker.  I look back over my lockdown and I didn't follow all the rules.  I did the easy things, like masks at the shops, etc, but I met friends, went on dates, when they weren't in my immediate bubble.  I would think a lot of folk bent the rules to fit their interpretation.

I've voted Tory in the past (not in the last few years), and the partygate scandal doesn't put me off voting for Boris......there's plenty of other reasons not to vote Tory under BoJo instead!

I expect there are a lot of older tory voters who won't like this at all...and their votes could be crucial in the next election.

It’s not difficult to see why this is a massive issue. The person who made these drastic laws that stopped people from seeing their loved ones went and broke those laws by having multiple parties.

If this doesn’t turn someone off Johnson then nothing will.

People who broke the rules, like yourself, seem to think it was common. I don't know any friends and neighbours who did any of those things during lockdown.

Maybe they're older or something?  I think a sizeable proportion followed the rules firstly as it was the law, but primarily as they believed the science.

It is a massive issue for some, but not everyone. I guess question is how much long term damage this does to Johnson and the government. Back in February when looked like Johnson could be on his way out because of partygate labour had about a 10 point lead in polls, that has been reduced to about 5 points recently but I think maybe that is increasing again (?). Where we will be in 6 months time, who knows? This could all be mostly forgotten about and people will be most worried about paying their bills over the winter and the war if looks like escalating. I still think most likely Johnson will still lead tories into next election just because there is no one else at moment,  and will win a majority but a much reduced one. Labour need about a 10 point lead just to get a majority of one so it's a real uphill task for them, Scotland is a killer...eventually they may have to talk about possible deals with SNP that will put off english voters even more.

It’s clearly a massive issue for quite a lot of people looking at recent polling. The diluting of the importance of this as an issue is a tool used by Johnson supporters to diminish his wrongdoing.

It may have the Tories leading but it looks as though Tories, Labour and neither are pretty much dead level, which does indicate a tight battle. This may well change if the cost of living crisis and forecast of increased global economic pain thanks to the Russian invasion of Ukraine gets worse I guess.

Exactly how the Tories are leading this when lead by a man who is strongly reported to have said "Fuck Business" when they were concerned about Brexit is its own mystery.

It might even be level to be honest.

All those charts have the Tory numbers sinking. Indeed that long-view graph in the last post seems to have been dropping since last summer, even if it only looks like Labour has caught up in the last few weeks. And this is still at the start of the economic crisis that seems to be coming our way uncomfortably quickly.

Indeed. It's a big polling moment as the Tories normally poll well on the economy.

tories usually more trusted with economy...labour only win when economy doing well (discuss).
