I think Sunak is arguing about the push by sage for a lockdown (or more restrictions in reality) last december with the rapid rise of omicron cases...and in the end he was probably proven right...but it was a hairy time as cases were really going up quickly, but also at same time would have been very difficult politcally to lock down just before christmas....or any time really.

Why is he going on old ground about lockdown and hardly saying anything about the cost of living!?

Uber thread from the amazingly named Torsten Bell about you know what...

Seems a much more sensible suggestion costed at £15bn but I can't see any of the parties running with it. As already said in the labour thread the middle classes don't want to sacrifice their skiing hols at February half term to pay the energy bill.

there is actually quite a lot of people who blame lockdowns for the current economic woes, especially on libertarian right...so maybe he's saying about this to win some of them over.

Those people aren’t correct.

he seemed to have two potentials solutions...a targetted solution which reduces bills for those on lower incomes, but this is complicated, or simpler solution of cut bills for everyone and get money back from those on higher incomes via taxes, but this is more difficult politically, especially for Truss/Sunak.

the guardian is going in hard with scare tactics, suggesting your chippy might close (mine xlosed month ago, worried now it might not re-open).

Easy to forget with these covid loans that once the business re-opened it not only had to generate enough income to cover its costs pre-covid but generate extra income for its repayment costs. Looks like cineworld is about to go under too.

that is scary. But it isn't just guardian...and it's hardly surprising with the rising energy and certain food costs...

I think there was a sense of panic, and a whole lot of unknown.

Well it was a unique event that had more in common with apocalyptic fiction than anything seen in politics for the last few decades. Some people were going to process it better than others. Sunak has absolutely misread the situation with his remarks, mind.
