Sam Smith would absolutely MSE headline.

Except he will never get booked because RandL is an ROCK and ALTERNATIVE festival.

What of their shows warrant this - everyone is putting sam smith forward for other headline at glasto and this seems a bit big for me to be honest.

For one, it's not, it's just a music festival, but more importantly, what does "alternative" even mean when Sam Smith is in the UK 10 top alongside last year's LnR headliner Stormzy?

Sam Smith has been huge since at least 2012. He is Glastonbury material and would outright headline MSE.

He isn't getting booked for the same reason Harry Styles and George Ezra aren't booked, and the reasons steps and S Club weren't booked. He's pure pop and belongs on R1 big weekend.

"Alternative" means not the pop drivel produced by mainstream labels out for a quick buck

Encompassing Indie, Garage, Rap, House, DnB and, as performed by Stormy, Rap .

Seems to be little cynical opi about these days, given how easy it is for people to produce and promote themselves these days.

KSI seems about the worst of it

Alternative is the CD that has the parental guidance sticker on.

Alternative is not the music that is played on Disney or Nickolodeon shows.

Alternative is not music that little girls have posters of and sing in to a hairbrush.

Alternative is the music teenagers sit on street corners, or in empty car parks, or on the back of a bus bumping on their phone.

Alternative is the concerts your parents won't let you go to until you're a certain age.

You will never find a dad with his 7 year old daughters on his shoulders at the concert of anybody playing R&L.

Alternative would not be played in Popworld.

Sam Smith, Miles Cyrus, Jonas Brothers, Arianna Grande, Justin Timberlake, Girls Aloud, Harry Styles, One Direction, Zayn Malik, Backstreet Boys, Queen, Little Mix etc.

still don’t believe the leaked 6 for the record

Neither - I can’t see the rap crowd being very happy at all if the only rap headliner is KSI - who’s popular, but nowhere near in the leagues of Dave stormzy posty etc

also hee just not taken seriously enough as a proper music artist - most people will go see him cause it’s KSI not because they’re a fan of his music - sure he’ll draw a big crowd but if he’s the only rapper announcer then I imagine there’ll be lots of angry calls for a “serious” rap headloner

The likes of Mabel, Tom Grennan, Lewis Capaldi, Sigrid, Becky Hill, Griff etc have been booked in recent years - and they’re no different from George/Harry, albeit no headliners like that though.

The festival has been embracing pop music for 4-5 years now.

There’s no such thing as Alternative music anymore (not in the sense it once was anyway) and Reading has not been an alternative festival since the mid noughties
