Alternative is the CD that has the parental guidance sticker on.

Alternative is not the music that is played on Disney or Nickolodeon shows.

Alternative is not music that little girls have posters of and sing in to a hairbrush.

Alternative is the music teenagers sit on street corners, or in empty car parks, or on the back of a bus bumping on their phone.

Alternative is the concerts your parents won't let you go to until you're a certain age.

You will never find a dad with his 7 year old daughters on his shoulders at the concert of anybody playing R&L.

Alternative would not be played in Popworld.

Sam Smith, Miles Cyrus, Jonas Brothers, Arianna Grande, Justin Timberlake, Girls Aloud, Harry Styles, One Direction, Zayn Malik, Backstreet Boys, Queen, Little Mix etc.

This is one of the best posts i've ever seen on here 😂

There's no way Sam Smith is MSE or bust either. Touring history nowhere near warrants that

Maybe Kasabian as a sub.

Would they be able to get Royal Blood as a sub anymore? Or do you think they’d ask for MSW headline?

Kasabian MSW i think

Not sure royal blood would be high on their list for bookings to be honest, they really haven't got the mainstream hits that a lot of similar bands do

Hmmm loads of bands touted as Reading MSW headliners playing as subs elsewhere🤔

Almost as if we’re being sold magic beans isn’t it

MSW headliners are basically sub or co-headline sized anyway.

What?!

Hang on I thought we had 6 bone fide healdiners now to make up for the loss of two stages and 50+ acts over the weekend

We’ve been duped lads!

It's like how Fall Out Boy subbed Biffy in 2016 and the festival marketed it as "A RECORD NUMBER OF FIVE HEADLINERS!" Same with Panic subbing Kendrick in 2018, and Twenty One Pilots subbing Post Malone in 2019. None of them closed either site, it was all about the festival's marketing team hyping the line-up.

MSE is still THE main stage. MSW is basically the Other Stage of R&L. A trio of Meghan, BMTH and Halsey would never have headlined if we still had the single Main Stage format, while Dave, AM and Rage/The 1975 would all indisputably have done.

I know, I was taking the piss

It’s the other stage, only not ANother thing to watch.

Theyve basically cut 50+ acts and 30% of choice, under the guise of “6 Headliners!!!!”

It is now a shit festival. Not because of who is booked but because the number of people booked is far, far lower.

The stripped out all choice to save themselves money under the guise of more.

Festival shrinkflation, only they have the brass balls to make out it’s an upgrade

And because of this new system and having to alternate between each stage, acts have shorter sets than before. Charlie XCX, for example, was only on for about 40 minutes when in previous years Main Stage subs would be on for at least an hour. And of course headliners now only play 1 hour 15 minute long sets.

I understand why they went with it in 2021 with COVID concerns still looming high, but they really should have scrapped it afterwards. It's such a crap setup.

What is the likelihood of us getting a 2hr set anytime soon?

Very few of the acts that do longer than 90 mins get booked anymore. i'm sure if foos come back they'll do 2h+

Blink 182 look like a possible headliner, given their tour schedule. No England festival dates announced and they are playing Scotland early September. Reading end of August would make sense. Maybe a secret set to avoid effecting sales for their England tour dates in October.

Days of an act like Blink doing a secret set are over. Would only be on the main stage and then its just a bit of a shit afternoon guest slot for a MSE headliner

Well they've already sold out their UK tour so in theory they could well have the demand and hype to do both, not least as a Reading line-up might well work out better value than some of the tickets to those shows.

Equally, however, I can't really see them doing both.
