I've been having shakes as a replacement for my usual go to of a  sandwich, crisps and chocolate bar for lunch.

I've been doing it for about a week now so will give it another week or so then weigh myself to see how I'm getting on.

Just the shakes, the powder stuff. It’s just things like ground down peas etc, off the top of my head I think it’s got 28 ingredients, all vegan and in theory you can live off of it, a couple of scoops is the equivalent of about 500 calories (I think).

My weight has crept up over the last 4-5 years and I'm about 3 stone heavier than I was in Summer 2017. 

Any tips?  At the moment I have Kellogg's fruit burst, a coffee, banana and apple for breakfast,  soup and bread for lunch and then a normal dinner.  I think though where I fall down is the snacking in-between then the beer/fatty food consumption at the weekend.

I think you just have to be disciplined with it. If losing weight is the key then ideally you’d have it for three meals a day and the weight will drop off. If that’s too tough then maybe just two meals a day and try to avoid the snacking. It’s nutritionally complete so although you’ll feel hungry, it won’t be doing you any harm.

I believe joey T was doing it for weight loss? I can’t remember his exact username to tag him in.

I think I can be quite disciplined, I did the gym 5 days a week for a few years (changed job and lost the routine as it was next to my office).  

I'm starting tomorrow so I might post in here how I get on with it if people are interested....I will definatly replace lunch and dinner, I get a free lunch at work although I do only have the soup and bread and I like socialising with everyone at lunch so I'm wondering whether to keep that in my diet. 

Also not sure what I will do at weekends when I'm going to football and gigs, am I allowed 7 pints and a portion of cheesy chips at the end of the night if I've only had Huel during the day?!

I watched some YouTube videos of people who used it and said they didn't feel hungry at all once they had started on it.

You can always try a 5/2 scenario, stick to it religiously on the week and don’t worry so much on the weekends. Obviously progress will be slower but should still see benefits and it might be easier to stick with.

That's a good shout, I'm only really at home or work during the week so that part should be ok.  I may even do 6+1 and see how that goes to start with. 

TBH I don't go getting pissed loads anymore either, usually only once or twice a month now but with festival season just round the corner if I'm at Glastonbury for 5 days and suddenly start eating loads of solid food, drinking (and other stuff) when I've only been drinking Huel for the main part I'm worried my guts will not like it, and a dodgy tummy/arse at a festival is not high on my wish list!

I don't like to lecture people/nag/ be negative as I feel the only way people lose weight/ get healthy is through their own choices. but I would say the reason you are snacking in between is those meals is because they arnt filling you up so you are hungry.

There's next to no protein in either of your breakfast or lunch (dinner 😜) and protein will keep you fuller for longer and really is the key to losing weight imo. Your protein goal (grams) for the day should be around 1.2x weight in kg. There's about 75g of protein in a 250g chicken breast for some perspective. Also about 1/3 of calories in protein are burnt off through digestion and also increase your metabolism more than any other food.

For example you could have protein oats in the morning and then have your fruit as shakes  throughout the day. 

Calorie counting is the best way to lose weight and using my fitness pal will help you track and also give you an idea of how many calories are in your snack which might stop you from snacking. 

This website https://tdeecalculator.net/ will work out your maintenance calories and then take about 300-500 off to get a deficit and go from there. 

Replacement shakes are just calorie counting/macro tracking but someone is doing all the work for you. My wife is on shakes and they are all high in protein.

Totally agree with all that, plus to expand a bit further I’ve always exercised pretty much 5 times per week, but when I’ve wanted to lose weight and cut a bit, I’ve done carb cycling and it’s incredibly effective for me. Essentially it’s eating carbs around your exercise and then not having them for a small period which temporarily tricks your body into burning fat until you eat carbs again and so on. I mention it simply because as you’ve highlighted, it’s not necessarily about what you eat it’s when you eat it.

Disclaimer: This isn’t necessarily right for everyone but it has always worked very well for me.

Bingo. 

It seems a lot to take in at first but it really is the most straightforward way to lose weight (or in the case of putting on muscle, gaining weight), eat less calories than your maintenance amount and you will lose weight. Obviously much better if those calories are 'good' calories full of nutrients that'll keep you full longer.

Having lived in Korea for a few years now, I've realised that the Koreans KNOW how to limit a hangover (limit being the key word here, not eliminate). Due to the extreme amount of mid-week boozing that happens here (you MUST arrive at work on time and fresh in the morning)

Point 1: Always eat while drinking (in korea, lots of restaurants are open 24hrs for this exact purpose). Time for another round? Buy some soup, someone getting the beers in? chow down on some dried meat. staggering home? pop in to the local convenience store and cook up some instant noodles. All of this can be applied to Glasto

Point 2: Hydrate, always

Point 3: Buy some of this (Not possible at glasto I know, but this s**t works):

Glami] Dawn 808 119ml - New World E SHOP_Korean Food

Point 4: Ibuprofen before bed

Point 5: Evaluate your morning situation and consider more ibuprofen

 

This will be my glasto hangover mitigation plan. In reality, it may end up being:

Get wasted

Forget above

Wake up rough, drink more, deal with it on Tuesday

So protein oats in the morning, then have Huel or have something different for lunch?

This is how to do it. I'm really not a fan of the diet culture because when everyone says "it worked for me last time" but there was something about it which meant they couldn't stick to it so it wasn't sustainable. Diets are only ever good if you can stick to it and use them to hone in on and remove bad eating habits permanently. 

E.g. eat that pizza, but average your calories over the week so your still within the target zone by eating a lighter lunch the day before or day after.

Finally, drink more water then you think you need to.

Yeah it's more about convenience for her and I've explained to her but she's free to do her own thing. 

 

If Huel is going to help you then have that but what happens in 6 months/ a year, I'm just giving you advice on how to make it sustainable for years to come not just a 6 months cycle like with Huel.

I think I'm the same tbh. If its easy I'll keep at it, I'm not a massive foodie and any help in getting the right thing inside me for the least amount of effort is worth it.

I've said I'll give it a go for a few weeks and see what happens and perhaps if it gets the weight off in a reasonable timeframe I can look at a long term alternative like you've suggested.

I'm pretty peeved at myself but I put a bit on then the COVID lockdown it piled on and I'm hoping this can help get me going again to get back down to an acceptable weight.

@gooner1990 Another tip for staving off hunger is drinking a fuckload of water whenever you get hungry. Our bodies/minds are shit at deciphering the difference between hunger and thirst so more often than not we think we’re hungry when we’re actually just a bit dehydrated. Sounds silly and obvious, but it helps. 

And although it’s actually effect on weight loss itself is pretty divisive, I always find fasting in the mornings/skipping breakfast for as long as possible (sometimes we’ll in to the afternoon, but that’s just me) helps me as it means when I finally do eat I can enjoy a nice proper meal rather than eating loads of small meals all day which I find a lot harder (once I’ve eaten one thing I find it hard to stop, so fasting for as long as possible removes the ‘oh I’ll just have a little snack’ element). The whole ‘breakfast is the most important meal of the day’ thing is, I find, bullshit, and I have a much clearer head when I haven’t filled my body with carbs, but I’m sure that varies from person to person.

As of 2019 my routine changed. It is now…

1. Wake up when the milk tractor is doing the rounds

2. Nip the coop for several bags of ice

3. Make pint of White Russian

4. Sit at camp and drink said White Russian.

5. Repeat step 3 and 4 ad infinitum until feeling better/too hammered to care anymore

As a bit more of an unusual 'symptom', dunno if anyone here gets hangover anxiety (or as I believe it's properly termed 'hangxiety'), but I do, and I find mint tea really helps with that. 

But as many have added, am I going to take mint tea - sure. Am I going to drink mint tea rather than another tin of warm lager (which does the same thing... Until Tuesday) at 10am? Probably not.

I got some of the electrolyte drops people were recommending in the 2019 Glasto Hacks thread and they were a lifesaver (granted, the dehydration was probably heat related rather than alcohol being the main culprit)

Coming back to this... did you start it after mate? I ordered some of the powders yesterday to give it a go, they should be coming today.
