Is it not cost more than anything else? Without the planning permission wasn't it setup costs of over £250,000 every year? For all we know, they could have looked at ways of developing the spider further now over the last couple of years. I would have loved to have seen where they took the crane, but I can't see it happening now.

Yes, ultimately it’s the cost due to failing to get PP to leave most of it up all year round, but there is a also a general attitude that people would rather have the spider back over something new that can evolve over time, irrespective of the PP issue, which is I think the point both of us were referring to.

This statement kind of says it all, Glastonbury is a good testing ground for them to develop new ideas:

Ah man... I so wanted it to be.  After my first Glastonbury the year before where Damon Albarn made me cry, I so wanted Gorillaz to blow me away.  Alas it was not to be.

Controversial? Yep. But I agree. Worst part of that show was the stream of inconsiderate people who just wanted to see Snoop Dogg again leaving while shouting "THIS IS SHIT" in front of people who were clearly staying for the show (like me). Technical issues didn't help and Albarn trying to recreate what happened the previous year was tragic but the rest of the show was good!

That said, the show I saw at the O2 was incredible rather than good (Humanz tour, not last year)

I'd rather they came back with something better than the crane that didn't work, didn't get planning permission and cost too much money.  As I said in the other thread, the spider was better than the afterburner from the very beginning.

The crane is still better than the afterburner though, who said progress had to be linear?

Sorry, but I don't even agree with that.  The position of the DJ on the crane is too high, far removed from the crowd. 

The atmosphere is lost on the crane.  The Afterburner will still be in use this season and it's a very immersive experience.

Personally as someone more excited by bands than DJs, I'd say that the Afterburner is by some distance the best of the 3 - the Afterburner with a live band on it is a fantastic sight.

Eh? Don’t you mean too low? You can just about touch the bottom of where the DJ is in the crane. I mean how much lower could they be?

I agree with the bit about the crane.

previous years I remember catching craig charles under the structure, probably the spider, during a day time slot and the atmosphere was chaotic and bonkers even when not rammed. felt like you were in the booth with him!

Think that was the time I saw him too...2016?  Was early evening on the Sunday IIRC.

I'm a big fan and will have attended all 3 of those sets. I'll admit I wish QOTSA got that slot this time around

Ah fair play, all power to ya! I caught them headlining Reading 2017(?) and they were ‘solid’ but didn’t blow me away- ‘knife in the ocean’ live had something about it though 

yeah I would love to see QOTSA at Glastonbury, though they do also love a secret set so unless it’s ruled out on feasibility I live in hope
