✨Drag✨

there's almost half an idea worth thinking about in terms of likening drag to blackface - i instantly dismissed it as nonsense, and then looked again at my thought process as to why its immediately nonsense: why impersonating one protected characteristic on one hand is fine, and empowering, and good - and why another impersonated protected characteristic is demeaning, racist and bad. Whats the difference? (well, there's bloody loads of difference)

still though, i had a cursory glance through the paper linked above and it is needlessly intellectualised bollocks. It reads a bit like a spoof paper written by someone impersonating a naive student leftist point of view, like that dill who does Titania McGrath on twitter/stand up.

back on topic - there was a load of drag in SHITV and a couple of previous incarnations of shangri-la. i seem to recall one of those phone booth/handset/live screen type things a few years back, but i was fairly inebriated and dont recall much other than that really. I wouldnt mind bumping into some of Ru's queens at the festival, i think itd be a right good laugh!

Oh no, It’s definitely not nonsense to explore whether it could potentially be demeaning to women.

But to liken it to blackface is entirely disproportionate.

Haven't read the link, but imo there's a difference between RuPaul-style drag and Mrs Brown's Boys "drag". I've always found it a bit off when you get comedians dressing as women rather than getting women into their act (eg Little Britain, Monty Python), but either way it's not really comparable to blackface.

Agree on both counts. There can be a challenging side to drag culture where women are all fishy and some of the chosen names are offensive (ones about abortion etc) but that comparison to blackface doesnt hold up.
