Tips on putting up a tent in the rain?

If rain is predicted, pack your clothes in bin bags in your bag... nothing worse than wet clothes before the festival even starts!

Aside from using a pop-up, practise it until you know exactly what you're doing. And include everyone in this so you have no lemons standing around watching!

Over several decades, including with terrible weather I've never had an occasion where putting up the tent was the issue. As others say - work together and as quickly as you can. If it gets a shower it will dry OK when it stops 😊

depending on your tent, get the outer up first so you can shelter?

Put the easiest and quickest tent up first … put all kit inside … then put up the other tents whilst kit remains dry …. Presuming you have more than one … if not stuff in bin bags and also use rucksack covers

^^^^ This. A bit of practice can really speed up pitching, well worth an hour on a dry day pre-festival to put it up & down a couple of times. 

Random tip, but take a couple of old tea towels - if it is raining & you get a bit of moisture inside the tent, wipe out before anything else goes in. 

And definitely agree with others who’ve said to waterproof all your gear - if r*in is forecast it might even be worth taking a small tarp you can wrap your other kit in while you pitch up. 

Not that any of this will be necessary, of course. 😉

-Know what you’re doing (at least watch a YouTube if you don’t have opportunity to practice)

- I always recommend using an additional footprint groundsheet but if it’s really tipping it down then use it to cover your bags then pull it under the tent once it’s up.

-if it’s a large tent with separate inner “bedroom” area make sure the bedroom door is unzipped or it creates a vacuum which gives a surprising level of resistance

-Get help for the bit where you need to feed the poles through the sleeves and into the sockets

-Once all your group’s tents are up go back to it and keep adjusting the position every peg in turn until it it’s really tight all round with no areas for water to gather

Some rucksacks have rain covers (or you can buy them), or used sturdy bin bags. 
Dry bags are really helpful. I’ve got some in all sizes from large to small, will keep things completely dry. And useful for dirty clothes. 
Tarpaulin to cover your stuff while setting up (one large one to wrap up it all up including underneath or two smaller ones). 
Some tents can be erected with the inner already connected. 
Definitely keep your sleeping bag dry!!

I always do this anyway...it proved to be particularly handy in 2017 when the coach toilet leaked over our rucksacks!

If you are driving then leave most of your stuff in the car on the first trip. Just take the tent, essentials and couple of cans. Get the tent up and then go back to the car for the rest of the stuff when it has stopped raining
