Does anyone know why they scrapped Hidden Stage this year? Issue with a sponsor?

It seemed odd when it had been in place for the previous half dozen years or so and was also good to get some great last minute additions.

They had the Metaverse Hidden Stage presented by Binance but noone gave a fuck.

Jokes aside, I guess they scrapped it, bc. selling such things to an investor is kinda hard. There is relatively little immediate reason in having a hidden stage that costs money and shits no tickets. It ofc makes sense in the long run, but most investors are just looking for quick, scalable cash-in opportunities.

A venture capital fund investing that has bought a minority stake in a business doesn't get to have a say in whether a single event has something as specific as a hidden stage or not (and in any case it had been sponsored as I said). They're a pretty passive investor, not involved in the day to day.

And to your point, you could say the same thing about Ciutat. Announced to little fanfare, it adds a lot to cost but isn't needed as in the end it's the main lineup that will determine commercial success. The Ciutat programme (and costs) has significantly expanded since the VC money.

I'm not saying Primavera isn't commercially minded, and of course it is, but not in a way in which we are getting a lesser musical experience. And heavy sponsorship has been a thing at Primavera since way before the external investor funding.

Rock Werchter first lineup is out. Interesting to see what else was floating around. Not really much i'd want to steal but I agree with what some people have said about The 1975. Absolutely massive show that seems to have converted heaps of fans this summer. Would have liked them there.

Sigur Ros and Jacob Collier would be great too.

because opinions ......people are alllowed to think Mad cool is better if they want

anyway i do notice people treat this festival a bit like Glastonbury which isnt a bad thing, but its more like supporting a football team, they will defend it to the hilt and rather aggressively at that, anyone who dares mention that oooo i like mad cool this year a bit more is shut down and laughed at (not by everyone) and not just you, should of really quoted the person you were quoting

if you had quoted me you'll see I put each to their own, absolutely no finger pointing at people who think Mad Cool is better.

I'm laughing at the line up poster & the fact that in the run up to the Primavera annoucement there was a lot of comparison with the 2 festivals, or at least the lineups, which now that both have been revealed is a bit of a head scratcher.

And yes, Primavera is my football team 🙂

Death Cab For Cutie and The Postal Service have just announced a 20th anniversary tour for Transatlanticism and Give Up for the US in the autumn, and they should really be playing Primavera. Think it’s a missed opportunity.

Was just about to post that. That would have been something.. really hope they‘re taking this to Europe too

Still analyzing Thurdsday's line-up and this is starting to look like a must-see. 🙂

That looks fun. Thursday is insanely good and keeps getting better, I'm well into double figures of must-sees, which I know I won't manage and I'm quite pleased that Halsey is there for non clash purposes!

Totally agree.

I think (possibly for the first time) for me, Thursday > Friday > Saturday

Death Cab is way bigger in the USA than in Europe, so it's not surprising that they chose to play a bunch of American dates in June.

The tour is September-October, I don't think they'll do any festivals this year.

Hopefully they'll do it again next year in Europe as well

I would love that. But the tour is to celebrate the 20 years of both albuns. Can't see them pushing it until next year (I hope I am wrong).

This sort of thing went out the window during the pandemic when stuff started to get pushed back. Bands are now celebrating 26th anniversaries, 32nd anniversaries, extending anniversary tours into extra years, etc. It doesn't really matter anymore and nobody really seems to care.

Can very easily see the DCFC/Postal Service double header getting booked at festivals in 2024 once they've done a test run for the headline shows (and it'd still count as a 20th anniversary as they'll all be announced within that time frame).

DCFC don't need another act to shift tickets and so much easier to tour their home country with another band than to tour Europe.

I suspect they will tour Europe at some point and Primavera could well be a stopping point but very unlikely as a double act and doubt will play Transatlanticism either. Sadly Primavera has mostly given up on albums played in full.

DCFC will tour Europe in March 2023. They can return to Europe in 2024 for festivals, but, I agree with you - not to play Transatlanticism in full. They released an album this year, so September/October tour seems to be a one-time thing (to mark the 20 year).

Postal Service did a 10 year tour in 2013, with some dates in Europe (inclduing s stop at PS - I think the only festival they played in Europe). Without new material (that will not happen), I think they will not be touring apart from this small leg in US.

so how do we rate this line up (compared to the line ups from, let'say 2014) from PS 2015 (the worst by looking at the poster imo) to PS 2022 (inflated by the pandemic as it was, it stands as the most packed ever. I don't count 2021, that was on another level)?
I'd say 2023 is on the same level as  that announced for 2020 (fountaines dc and caroline polachek, how small were they at the time!). A couple of headliners (Halsey and Calvin Harris) wasted vs one (disclosure); few but very big and unmissable names vs plenty of "smaller" headliners. Same strenght in the undercard (2022 main selling point)

but yeah, no way this can be labelled weak for primavera standards.
I'd say comparisons can be made from 2018 onwards. Before the festival was equally strong but smaller.
2022>2020 (bad bunny, fountaines dc and caroline polachek booked at that time were just genious bookings)>2023>2018>2019 would be my ranking

I was maybe too fixated on Blur being on the line-up, so after seeing their name in the video, I instantly became a fan of the line-up. Of course, there were other great names there, but maybe not as many as I had expected. And Thursday actually seemed like the weakest day.

But after 10 days of digging into Thursday's line-up, I really think it's a classic strong Primavera day and I'm already in the "worrying about the clashes" phase.

I haven't made any analysis about this and I may be wrong, but I also feel like there is much less "urban" music than in 2019 or 2022 which is a positive thing for me.

So, all in all, even though I'm not yet completely familiar with this year's line-up, I guess this would be my ranking:

2022>(2021>2020>)2023>2018>2019
