Rumblings I've heard are to do with licensing and being able to actively advertise live stuff as being on the Wednesday. How accurate that is I don't know, but it would certainly go some way to explaining it.

If there's an advertised full program of entertainment on the Wednesday it causes people to plan to arrive even sooner leading to a massive crush at the gates Wednesday a.m. In an ideal world people would trickle in throughout Wednesday and Thursday with a steady throughput on the roads/gates, in reality as time has gone on many (most) want to get there Wednesday morning with the gates under seige from 8 a.m. I'm thinking they are trying to spread the load by not advertising Wednesday acts.

Another thought, if the build is behind schedule it's quite possible some of these venues won't be ready in time, I've been on a Wednesday before where things didn't look anything like ready.
