Crowd control issues

The capacity should've been capped a long time ago. Whoever decided putting toilets near the other stage left field exit and food stalls facing them needs the sack. Impossible to get through making the walk to pyramid even worse than it was. Making me reconsider coming anymore really, I've been stuck in too many crushes the park was dangerous for Wet Leg, people getting funny about people trying to move out the crowds.

Different programming would solve a lot of this. I love Rufus, for example, but he can’t have had more than a few thousand on the Pyramid even including the seated folks up the hill - that should have been the slot for TLC.

That said, the Arcadia Park crush was a bad one and could have been sorted with better directions - it’s not unpredictable that thousands of people are going to take the most direct route up from the Other to Arcadia straight after the headliners. It’s not the first time there been a crush up that lane, it’s happened in 2017 and 2019 too.

They’ve massively fucked up. It’s insanely busy everywhere all the time. We also got stuck in the Park-Arcadia shambles… horrible stuff. And it was definitely made worse when the idiot security put in a half-arsed one way round the tree, which you didn’t know about until you’d been dragged by the crush to the point they said “no way thru, turn round”.

I know they kind of ‘exploded’ since the booking, but Wet Leg on The Park is probably the worst scheduling I can remember. They’re absolutely huge right now - all over Radio One etc. I think they’d have even drawn one of the bigger crowds of the week on the Pyramid. And everybody knew it was going to happen too - that stage really should be for acts with a ‘cult’ following. As soon as a mainstream act is on there will always be problems.

I don’t  know what is going on. I don’t mind a bit of crowd but this is just awful. Just seas of people shuffling from one place to another. I’ve been coming 3 decades and I adore Glastonbury, but I actually thought I might not come back again. I can’t believe I’m even thinking it. It’s just been unpleasant and I’m not feeling enthusiastic about doing it again today. And tomorrow!!

Anyone else here remember the secret Radiohead set in the Park? That was crazy and not helped by the mud. No idea how it compares (Wet Leg looks busier) but remember it taking an age to get in at the back and then you couldn't see or hear anything. It's pointless having crowds like that at the Park as you need to be close to really enjoy it. I think Wet Leg should definitely have been on Pyramid. I think Self Esteem in John Peel will also cause issues (should be Other surely?).

Similar size, but should have cleared easier as the whole site is walkable rather than having to stick to paths as you would when crazy muddy. I was up fairly close and the crowd felt fine, but it took forever to get out (the 3 pints I had during wet leg didn’t help!). Wet Leg after the Libs on other would have held the massive crowd already there in one place. Despite the crowds (and they are just everywhere this year), still had a ball!

Combination of poor scheduling and more people I guess. If TLC and Sugababes have barely any competition then of course people are going to flock there

Again absolutely crazy scheduling of Sugababes . Next door to SE corner where it is obvs would be a pre SE corner gig. I got in the field but nowhere near the tent. Managed to get a spot on one of the rafters of the inn.

I'm glad to hear it! Fully deserved after your sterling work in the shit thread these past couple of years sir.

Perhaps stage slotting/crowd control/security measures might have to do with the obvious loss of organizational knowledge that occurred to all festivals over the past 2 years. A lot of people in the business have had to switch jobs during the pandemic, and that made a lack of experience in operating a festival as complex as Glastonbury.

There’s probably something in this but at the same time the issues with the stage placements for Wet Leg etc yesterday could be seen a mile off. Shouldn’t have needed an experienced organiser to work out that putting a huge singalong band like TLC on West Holts whilst Plant & Krauss are on the Pyramid would be a silly idea. I know they like to design the Pyramid lineup based on on ‘credibility’ as much as popularity, but if you’re going to repeatedly increase the capacity of the event then there comes a point when you have to bite the bullet and just stick the biggest names on your biggest stage.

Similarly we’ve all been saying for weeks that Olivia Rodrigo’s slot today will be dangerous, hope to be wrong but based on the stories from yesterday we won’t be. And if that rumour about Paolo Nutini in the Rabbit Hole is correct.. well.
