no wonder everyone’s going crazy

True.im more bothered by no names when I'm not going than I ever was when I was going.

Could have the opposite effect on Thursday, even more people gravitate to the one stage they know has something on and don't look to explore elsewhere because they do t know if they'll like it!

True - I'd forgotten that one year I ended up in a massive bottleneck overlooking part of the kids' area because some people were performing - as they stated repeatedly and loudly, FOR CHILDREN - and because nothing else was on they'd gathered an audience of people gawping from the footpath. Imagine the same thing x100 would happen on Thursday.

Looking at it from the opposite angle, what's the actual benefit of keeping the lineup under wraps?

I think Boomtown’s reasoning is that they want people to come for the atmosphere/ world building rather than for any particular booking.
Kind of apples to oranges though as the largest act Boomtown ever booked is maybe Gorillaz?

Mind you, they've only coincidentally done that since the lineups have considerably weakened

Funny that eh? Tbh I always thought it was a mistake booking acts that big because they suck up all the oxygen in the room. They should have stuck with The Specials and Lauryn Hill and then no-one would be calling the recent lineups weak.

That's a good point. That said, I think they've managed to get people onside with their ethos of experience over lineup.

And Glastonbury do the same by not announcing before the sale but don't see any benefit to anyone festival/punter or artist on a site the size of Glastonbury of not sharing the line up until you are through the gates.

Except when they said that although they were making major changes to the set up (effectively losing Uptown) that amounted to a significant reduction in areas and geographical spread of the festival, they would not be compromising on the size and quality of the line up.

And then they really did.

And lots of people got cross!

I love the philosophy and approach of the Boomtown crew, and I have massive sympathy for their (and all in the entertainment sector...) plight over the pandemic, with no guarantee that their impressively grown event and business model would not go to the wall. It must have been terrible...

BUT...I think it's universally accepted that their messaging regarding the line-up for the first post-COVID festival was a leeetle bit cheeky!

Rumours are the bookies having stopped taking odds on headliners. Might be time to stand by your bed’s tomorrow??!

Nah few more weeks yet I think, towards end of feb for the first poster.

Not sure that's how bookies work if something is a sure thing they would not take a bet on that specific act headlining.

However if I rang up and said to put £1000 on Oasis to headline this year they would set odds and take my money in a flash...

But if they knew a certain act was going to be anounced and was a sure thing they would close bets on that one thing specifically.

Stopping taking odds on Glastonbury in general is not a sentence that makes much sense sorry.

You might want to elaborate what specifically these rumours you heard say.

It is pretty much a fact that bookies have stopped taking bets on this year’s headliners.

A month ago, most of them had a market for Glastonbury headliners on their sites.  Around the time that the Stevie Wonder rumours started, the markets started disappearing - Ladbrokes and Coral were the last to pull them, a couple of weeks ago.

I think your confusing taking odds of there website and closing markets these are most definitely not the same thing.

It's more likely not worth the effort of working out odds during to betting drying up on them.... that does not constitute closing the market.

If you wanted to put a custom bet on Glastonbury tomorrow they would offer you odds..

They may refuse to offer you odds if you choose something that is highly likely to be true though

Try it

I did, a fortnight ago.  I walked into a Coral branch and tried to put a bet on Stevie Wonder.   They couldn’t/wouldn’t give me odds on any Glastonbury headliners.

In fact, these days the staff in the shop aren’t able to do much - they direct you to a terminal that I assume has the same markets and odds as their website.  If it isn’t on there, “they don’t offer it”.

Go back in and ask for odds on Oasis or the Stone Roses headlining..  I think you will find the market is still open if the bet is going to guarantee making them profit

Bookies odds are not about probably but about making profit for the betting company

There not stupid If there is a real chance Stevie is gonna headline they don't want you making money of them

they have no idea what might be true (same as they don't know what horse will win a race)., they only know what their exposure is for every named act. its about the book & the market.

the year Kasabian headlined, i put on the biggest bet i could afford they then closed the book on Kasabian.

Absolutely.  If loads if us went in and bet on a random act (that is not likely to be tru  eg Prodigy to headline to the Pyramid

They would very quickly lower the odds and then stop them all together.

Does not mean it's more likely to be true

It's about them making profit and nothing else

Do we have a most common time for lineups / posters dropping ? Last year it felt like many of the area announcements dropped at midday . Presumably no pattern but maybe early mornings ?

My only worry is that now I mainly work from home, I often get up later so may miss it if it's at 8am.

First World problems and all that.
