I know it's not a Glastonbury query, but with more folks on this forum than the others I thought I'd try here.

Have any of you volunteered for Oxfam at Download?

What roles do oxfam cover

How many shifts/what shift patterns.

Is Oxfam parking next to Oxfield

Any other info of note?

Thanks

I was staff campsite manager at Download this year and Oxfam are camped in their own fenced off compound within the staff campsite.

Oxfam do the accessibility areas, so accessible check in, FOH viewing platforms, accessibility campsite etc

Parking isn't too far away from the compound, obviously earlier you get there, its nearer the front. Oh and they have crew live in vehicles in with them, albeit tightly packed in.

i am quite looking forward to volunteering this year. assuming i can get a place.  might not be saying that come july

I have ran into lots of new volunteers and some assume that they can
swap shifts or adjust shifts to suit themselves but they soon discover they cant.

sure its all down to luck - best way is to assume the worst and you never know as you may be lucky.

when I started in the 80's I would work 30 events per year { not all weekend festivals } - longest event I worked at was 13 days at Hyde park in 2006  { over a two week period not sure why they had a gap of 1 day } so there was days I had no interest in the bands appearing that day but I had agreed to do the 13 days so there was no way I was going to miss those days.

so really if you have the right attitude you should be fine.

sure its not for everyone but I know people who have worked at events for
over 30 years.

Hello all you lovely people.
As you may or may not know I’m a coordinator with FMS at the festival.

We are full but I have a very good friend who wants to come and volunteer for the first time next year at the farm.

Is there a list of who to apply to please? Thank you and take care.

I posted a list in this topic, was a while ago.

I’d suggest Oxfam… aside from the fact I love Oxfam, I have friends that work with FMS and parking same place and camping next door to each other works out perfectly.

Although, as FMS coordinator, could you not get them a guest ticket? I’ve been offered them by my friends in the past but I prefer working as it slows down my excessive behaviour 😂

No unfortunately. We are only allowed 1 paid for ticket each, but we don’t get them for all our volunteers 😢

The organisations I know of:

Open application

Wateraid

Green peace

FE Staff

Need a recommendation from someone

Litter pickers

Recycling

Need to be part of an organisation

Workers Beer company(works off recommendations as well)

Campaign for nuclear disarmament (property lock ups)

"South West" school/charity clubs (for internal stewarding positions and campsites)

Need specialist skills

This was a summary I put together back in July @westholtschic

Might put together a spreadsheet if I've some spare time with dates and eligibility criteria in.

Elton on Sunday is good for Oxfam peeps, vast majority of shifts finished by that point.

Unless you get an E shift, you can probably even leg it from D shift and get to the back of the pyramid for the last hour.

                        Wed.    Thu  Fri    Sat  Sun

6am - 2pm.        A         D.     B    E       C

2pm - 10pm.      B.         E.    C    A.      D

10pm - 6am.      C.         A     D    B       E

But… if you’re unlucky enough to get that shift pattern, it will be difficult to swap! 😬

I think most (all?) on E shift wouldn't actually work that Sunday overnight. The gates get handed over to security once they've had their shift change. Means you usually get an early finish on D shift too.

Think the E shift people usually get front loaded to the Wednesday as it's so busy. It's actually a nice pattern to get. You miss very little. Never had it myself but a few friends had it this year.

Not all, there are a few people on the overnight, or at least have been in the years I'm aware of. As best I can remember it tends to be the vehicle gates are stood down but there's still a skeleton crew covering the main ped gates and road crossings.

As well as shifts being brought forward onto the Wednesday, a few more have their final shift moved to the Monday morning, to assist with departures.

Ped gates were stood down too this year. And they were the last time I got D shift, a good few years back. But yes, the road crossings and Oxfield would both need people but that's gonna be a very small number

so volunteers whats been your most fun shift and why ? must be some stories to tell .... someone mentioned manning a vehicle gate and letting Michael in ... id imagine the gate shift when gates open would be a fun one

Supervising Gate C this year for gate opening, after two cancelled years.  It was a great team and the joy of people coming in to glasto in the sunshine after the dark years was something that’s stayed with me all year! So many happy people! 😀😀

Let us know how you get on or not if you prefer

I'm not shocked, but sad I won't get to be part of what the station will be doing next year -

We’re really sorry to say you haven’t been selected for the Worthy FM crew for 2023.

We had a phenomenally high standard of entries this year, and the judges spent many hours carefully listening to, deliberating and discussing each applicant in turn. We genuinely thank you for the time and effort you put into your applications.

Please don’t let this put you off applying for Worthy FM in future years however. We had many great entries, and we’d love to hear from you again.

What a shame, had you done worthy FM before ? must have been massively over subscribed I guess

No, this was my first time applying, as my wife has decided that 10 festivals was enough for her, so I fancied doing something as part of the festival now I didn't have to worry about anyone other than myself.  I've been doing weekly shows on community radio for 6 years, including interviewing bands and charities at Latitude and Standon Calling, so hoped my experience would give me a chance, but it was not to be.  I did get a feeling it would be an extremely popular thing for people to go for, and there aren't very many positions at all.

I’m sure that would have been your dream gig but in the situation you describe I would really recommend Oxfam! A week on the farm, great pre parties in the SE corner on Monday and Tuesday, good people to meet etc etc

I'm trying to register, but keep getting "We're sorry there was an error processing your request, please check your details and try again or contact us at heretohelp@oxfam.org.uk or 0300 200 1300"

I'll try again tomorrow!
