Do people have a cut off date where they stop trying or are we all here until the weekend before? I’ve got a 2 week holiday from 1 June and really need to know before then so I can arrange extra leave…. I’ve got it booked tentatively but will be really complicated if I don’t know before the 1 June what I’m doing. So I’ve said the 1 june is my cut off for trying but I know if the deadline gets there I probably won’t be able to stop myself trying.

I got an oxfam place on the 21st June in 2019.. it really can be last minute. Good luck everyone still trying!

I got mine on around the  19th that year too. I’m still in for now. Let’s hope it’s a lucky week

has anyone had experience of camping in general camping rather than volunteer campsites? think this has been discussed but god knows what page that's on

basically I have a friend who is volunteering who 100% intends to turn up to his shifts, but he was wondering about camping in the festival with friends as he was so desperate for a ticket this time round. I know it isn't 'allowed' and looks dodgy to the staff but wondered if anyone had any anecdotes...

I've had friends do it with me - critical point is just making sure it isn't obvious they're "leaving" the volunteering field. If they just leave with a backpack and have a bed in other tents on site, who is anyone to know what they're doing. On the other hand, if they pack up all their gear and move out tent and all, probably will raise some suspicion. All just common sense!

thanks. yeah im concerned mostly because he would need his own tent to camp with us haha - one of his group he's volunteering with might have a tent that he can stay in on tues so he doesn't have to pack up his own in plain sight maybe. I'll have to ask him. perhaps he could go out with just his tent at first and come back for his stuff later to draw less attention

I would have thought that packing up and moving his tent would draw the most attention, just carrying a bag out would be less obvious - unless it's a humungous bag.

What’s the best day to arrive? I’m planning on driving down from the north west on Tuesday morning but would I be better off coming Monday? Does anything happen on the Monday night?

I'd come down on the Monday as on the Tuesday unless you arrive in the morning you'll get snarled up with the general public arriving.

Monday night the crew bars are pretty busy and we have a efests crew/volunteers meet up

yeah I mean he could stay in a mate's tent in the work campsite on tues then save his own tent for wed - and carry it out separately. still obviously a tent tho so yeah dodgy.

Same as @dondo I’d recommend coming down on Monday. We also travel from the NW & it’s a fairly long journey & arriving without public traffic in the frame helps a lot. I’d also say that much like Wednesday & Thursday have become many punters favourite days, Monday & Tuesday are the days we love as volunteers. It’s lovely to be able to roam the site and check out the crew bars before the public get there and ‘spoil it’! If you don’t arrive til late on Tuesday, you miss a key part of the volunteer experience.

Just do the two small tents thing. Or crash in someone else's tent. It's a no brainier. A lad did it next to my tent last year in Tom's field (volunteers). Did all his shifts but was off in his jollys crashing elsewhere. Just keep it low key.

Walking off with tent and rucksack ? You may as well shout to the supervisors you are doing one. Just silly

Thanks.

Do you get signed in/get your shifts as soon as you arrive, regardless of the day?
And what do you tend to do on the Tuesday?

Yes either day, when you register.

Not sure what was going on with Oxfam last night, but my Distill went off at  03:21 & 04:39 with Boardmasters becoming available and then selling out.  Obviously, it was the night I forgot to silence my PC....

Yes - you get your shift pattern, tabard, map, shower & meal tokens etc as soon as you like after arrival. Your shifts are already set so there is no advantage in getting there sooner other than maybe getting your request on the swap board sooner.

On Tuesday we tend to make sure we know where our shifts are, & just wander round the site marvelling at its emptiness, and finding crew bars & having a few drinks. You can also potentially pick up wrist bands for some of the more exclusive backstage bars in T&C & Shangrila who may not let ordinary crew in later in the week. There is a crew bar crawl on Tuesday evening.
