Coldplay - Why the hate?

I went to watch Coldplay at Wembley last night, possibly one of the top 10 sets of my life, and certainly the best one this year so far, (sorry Rammstein,) and in less than perfect conditions too... Which got me wondering, why do so many of you hate them? 

Is it just because they've played the big G so many times? 

Everything about them seems so inline with glasto, seriously pushing the climate change agenda. Their set is stacked with hits and seriously entertaining. The crowd was lively as hell... He even makes a point about phones at concerts, asking everyone to put them away for one song, and gets the whole stadium bouncing for that song too, it was great.

That's fair enough, I like 'most' of the songs in their current set. There's a few that bore me, but they only make up around 1 in 5 at the very most. Other bands have a much higher ratio of shit for me.

By far the worst bit of Stormzy's headline set was Chris Martin coming on.

It was when I realised I enjoyed A Head Full of Dreams that I'd turned into someone who'd embarrass my kids. Thank goodness I don't have any.

I for one really like them. Seen them a good few times over the years including my first Saturday night headliner (2005) so I have a soft spot for them.

I appreciate that others don't!

I think there's a lot of people who like to be contrarians for the sake of it. They want a target and because of Coldplay's inoffensiveness and the amount of times they've been at the farm, they're targets from a lot of "real" music fans.

Thankfully, my 18 and 19 yr olds both love Coldplay, and judging by the makeup of the crowd last night, they're not alone by any means.

But you're more of a hip hop / D&B fan aren't you? I seem to remember we have a lot of crossover in music taste generally (from your perfect lineup.) But I just happen to like a lot of bands from other genres, who's music I really enjoy. 

Anyway, point is, you don't like their style of music in general, and that's fair enough.

Idk because some of their early material is absolutely genius. I think they’ve just made themselves a bit of a joke by venturing into genres like EDM, pop, etc.

I still think their debut is an absolute masterpiece.

Pretty much what I was going to say, first two albums are incredible then it all went a bit too pop and breezy for me.

Really enjoyed their 2016 headline, but that was mostly down the the spectacle of it rather than the music

They're just dull, and dull music gets the most criticism on this forum. There's nothing really wrong with them, but with this forum attracting mostly die hard music fans, I think people here would rather listen to something interesting and divisive than something that's just bland and inoffensive.

Most of their music is pretty average. They're a bit like Ed Sheehan in a way, save from a few gems early on in their career. But if you want to hear those you have to endure all that Sky Full Of Stars Paraparaparadise My Universe Hymn For The Weekend shite.

Tbh I don’t mind some of their super poppy stuff. I think they drift for me because their first two albums captures something that a lot of bands try to do and fail.

Albums 1 and 2 is like Radiohead if they were more commercially orientated.

Muse I’d say are a bit different.

Started out cool and a bit cutting edge, but then decided to hammer the cringe in a bid to become a stadium rock band… and I guess it worked.

I listen to other genres as well: Reggae/Dancehall, Rock (but only 60's/70's), some punk bands, some RnB (new definition), various dance music and plenty that I can't categorize.

This sums Coldplay up for me.

The Scientist is one of the greatest songs ever written and I'll die on that hill.

Sorry Skip, the line you highlighted wasn't a dig at all, I saw from your perfect lineup that there were other tastes in there, some I'd not even heard of! I meant that, as well as having a lot of crossover with you, I happen to like bands from genres you didn't mention at all. 🙂

I went on Saturday and absolutely agree with your post, great band and brilliant gig. Always loved seeing them on the farm also, but it does feel a bit uncool to like them these days which is a shame as ive been a huge fan since the start.

It was really good wasn't it. Not sure I could have coped with that amount of dancing in Saturday's heat though 😮 how was that? It threw it down last night, right up until the support act came out, (H.E.R btw, and they were awesome) then it dried up. So it was kind of perfect, dry and cool by the time Coldplay started. 

They did 'murder' 2 All Saints songs last night though, when they bought out Shaznay Lewis... And all the young fans around us looked completely lost as we sang along to them... 😂

I went to Wembley Tuesday with a friend. I rarely listen to them, but their music is reasonably tuneful, inoffensive and, importantly in the circumstances, familiar . I've seen them a couple of times (including at Glasto) so knew they would put on a brilliant show...and they really threw the kitchen sink at it, so much so that the music almost became secondary to the overall experience, which really was something else. 

At times it was almost overwhelming, there was so much going on, and for the first 90 minutes it really was exciting. The crowd were totally hyped and I felt I was seeing things I hadn't really seen done that well before. The songs were largely anthemic and probably written with huge crowd singalongs in mind, and Wembley can rarely have looked and sounded so good.

As the night wore on, I guess the novelty of all the lights, wristbands, fireworks, confetti cannons, beach balls, and mini-stages wore off a little and I started to feel the music was a bit weak and 'samey' in places. However, I don't think they deserve all the criticism - they've become one of the biggest bands in the world and Chris Martin seems a genuinely nice guy. I don't see what's to hate.....
