The phrase 'money to burn' is clearly a hyperbole to exaggerate their point that AL is not exactly a megastar act and top of everybody's 2024 wishlist, but more of a novelty act people are going to see to relive their teens. I also highly doubt that Benj is an elected conservative MP...

The average 30-40yr old in the UK does have a significant disposable income btw, according to the ONS, or rather the correct term here is discretionary income. Especially in London, hence 2 dates at the O2.

I am actually a Tory MP, otherwise everything else you say is spot on 👍🏼

Think Editors are only strangely MASSIVE in Belgium. I think there are a few outliers in Belgium, which I guess kind of makes sense due to having a few languages in such a tiny place

…That said Lavigne is not headlining a mainstream Reading sized festival in the U.K.

The focus isn't on Editors here - the point is that Avril Lavigne is getting big slots across Europe and theres no reason why the uk would be any different.

I don't think she's likely for MSW headline but she does seem around that size

Her size in Europe is as big an irrelevance as Editors to her size in the U.K

Again to try and bring some actual data into the equation. She’s (second) headlining a festival in Germany, based on the metrics she’s used here, she is objectively bigger in Germany

From 2018 but proves the at she remained significantly more relevant in Germany and is therefore likely bigger still now with the latest push in Germany

Another reason why she may remain unusually more popular in Europe

Also, for what it’s worth, her last 2 albums have charted significantly higher in Germany than the UK

Bloody hell, I quote one tone deaf comment and this page starts sounding like a Daily Mail article on the temerity of people queueing at foodbanks to own shoes...

Gah, I was reading the US numbers on the album section on mobile. I also had the wrong German column 🤣

Still means she’s smaller than The Lathums though on that front!

Yes and no, without actually knowing the sales figures the chart positions are slightly irrelevant.

Blinks last album got two number 2 but probably sold enough to get to number 1 most weeks (just happened to release the same time as rolling stones) but you would in no way say blink are smaller than the lathums

Yup, ultimately it’s an utter irrelevance (which is why I added the “for what it’s worth originally”), esp when comparing country to country

Looking at the numbers Lavigne didn’t drop of as much as quickly as I thought in the U.K.

There is still zero chance of her playing second (as in 2nd headliner) at Reading though…

I think high chance. Seeing as a new line up, probably 2nd/3rd down on the day

If Catfish are back they'd headline MSW again. They're probably a good shout actually, considering the potential pool of headliners for that crowd seems to be pretty slim this year. One or two of Catfish, Liam Gallagher, Gerry Cinnamon or Kasabian will be there next year I reckon.

Worth mentioning that 2024 will be 10 years since Catfish's debut, which might be what the tour is about.

🤣

Basically, I’d personally be horrified if Lavigne was announced as a MSW headliner, while others would think it was about right.

Im pretty sure we’re fulfilling Chads talking ourselves down prophecy with this.

Next thing we know Papa Roach will be nailed on for a sub spot 🤣

Last 10 years punching well above:

2013 - Mumford and Sons

2014 - Kasabian, Arcade Fire

2015 - Legendary headliners: Kanye, Foos, The Who - this is insane

2016-23 - none

I don't think Kasabian or Arcade Fire was that weak at the time. Maybe in retrospect it looks that way but both seemed quite popular then. Kasabian definitely drew a crowd, and might still do even with their adjustment. Not sure what Arcade Fire's status is, particularly after they skipped the UK last summer.
