Doja cat is 100% big enough to headline r&l and will most probably find herself on MSE if she does. I’d say she’s as big as Sam fender here (or maybe a tad less) but obviously with a more global appeal

Tell you something, would be a hell of a leap from playing your last UK show outside London at Manchester's Gorilla to headlining Reading and Leeds. (I am aware there has been a pandemic, but still.)

I know Planet Her has gone platinum over here, but Scarlet debuted at #5 on its opening week with 6,076 in sales. That includes the streaming maxims, and all that jazz, I believe?

Obviously, not the most reliable measure, but still.

The way I say it is she'd be a strong MSW headliner and a weaker MSE headliner. Could do either depending on the strength of the lineup.

Paint The Town Red has been a pretty massive single.

This is exactly it

and with something like blink 182, Eminem, Fred again, and kasabian etc also on the lineup I don’t think they’d have any problem popping her on MSE, especially as it means they’d have a POC female as one of the “proper” headliners  in a year where all the other acts are very white male

It undoubtedly has, and I believe there was a discussion earlier about younger audiences potentially being drawn to such singular songs rather than the broader catalogue for bookings.

I've been busy championing the idea that Pyramid sub / Other headliner is akin to the MSW headline position at Reading and Leeds. Given Doja Cat was booked for the former position before the pandemic (I believe?), then my own logic points to her being a credible MSW shout.

But... ach, I think I've just got the blinkers on. I just don't see it. Happy to be proved wrong.

So was WAP and Savage when MTS got MSW.

Lewis Capaldi has 6 number 1 singles, and has a 14x platinum album. He was only MSW.

I swear we are lowering the bar daily for what belongs on the MSE, purely based on our fandoms.

Where do you get your stats from, because neither of these statements are true lol.

Also Sam Fender hasn't sold anywhere near as much as Lewis Capaldi has, yet he was MSE. Stats and sales aren't the only measure, clearly.

So in the UK alone his top 10 reaching songs (and BPI sales figures)...

Platinum= 300,000 for an album, 600,000 for a single.

Bruises - No. 6 - 2.4 million sales minimum

Grace - No. 9 - 1.2 million sales

Someone you loved - No.1 - 4.8 million sales

Hold me while you wait - No.4 - 1.2 million sales

Before you go - No. 1 - 2.4 million

Forget me - No. 1 - 0.6 million

Pointless - No. 1 - 0.4 million

While you wait - No. 1 - 0.4 million

His album reached No. 1 and sold 1.5 million copies.

Now Doja Cat has 4 top 10 singles:

Say So - No. 2 - 1.2m

Kiss me more - No. 3 - 1.2m

You right - No. 9 - 0.4m

Paint the town red - 0.4m

Her album Scarlet sold 300k copies reaching No.3, and her latest album has sold and streamed 40k copies in 2 months.

Doja Cat is a busted flush tbh at this point. And I absolutely agree about the Sam Fender comment, he's destined for BBC R2 and we will look back at his booking in 10 years as another Radiohead bland "I forgot he existed".

kasabian and fred again in the radio 1 tent sounds like a recipe for disaster

would need a massive hanger stage if your putting acts that big in it

aitch would be absolutely rammed too even though he is a bit smaller - against blink would be full to the brim of the leavers crowd

---

Maneskin could sub still i think - they played like 4pm on glasto's 4th stage this year (not really sure why honestly).

They defo won't be booked to headline - they are old news in the mainstream now imo

They seem to be a big deal on the mainland but it's like the debates about Bad Bunny or Tyler The Creator - bands aren't universally the same degree of big everywhere they go. Maneskin are big enough to play one-off arenas here but headlining a big event like this requires another level of fame imo.

Im not sure if you're are aware of quite how big the big tent was. It was a MASSIVE hangar, only with open sides.

Official capacity was 20,000 in 2011 (https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-berkshire-14475171)  it increased in size again post that when they raised the full festival capacity further in the 2010s...

It was a bone fide big festival second stage, pretty much 2 Wembley arenas big.

That said I think (bar Aitch) they are too big for that slow and would be better off subbing the main stage if they have them.

Traditionally Big Tent headliner was about the equivalent of 3rd on Main Stage....I think Aitch would be perfect up against Blink, as was the planned AJ Tracey vs RATM bokking in 2020. He would deffo get a good, big crowd and a proper headline atmosphere in there.

Tbh, looking at the type of attendees at each act in 2022/3, if you'd put Digga D, AJ Tracy, Knucks, Central Cee, Bru-C in the R1 tent even with 20k+ capacity, there will be a number of fights, a stabbing or 2, robbery, assault.

It was Bru-Cs set where I watched some 17 year old 'yoof' types run up and smash an old man in the stomach and laugh as he keeled over.

In 22, aside from the Monkeys and Dave, Bruc, AJ, Digga were the biggest crowds I saw.

Enter Shikari or Fontaines in the tent would have an electric atmosphere. The hip hop acts would be just moody and wannabe gangsterish.

R1 tent is meant to be for at least a bit more niche acts not your super mainstream rappers like Aitch to begin with

Putting a super commercial capital FM act in there against a rock headliner such as Blink is always going to be rammo - but then if you didn't people would complain nothing is on. Better choice would be a less rowdy one thats not going to have moshpits everywhere or a big dance act perhaps.

Chad is right AJ would be absolutely chocker in there - and Aitch would be too ... maybe even busier honestly

wonder if there was no covid aj might have ended up getting moved

The old R1 tent was for acts that would otherwise sub the MSW stage.

Would have been past years -

17: You me at 6, Flume, Haim

18: Wolf Alice, Pendulum, Diplo

19: Dave, Mura Masa, Bastille

20: Sam Fender, AJ Tracy, Rex Orange County

21: Sam Fender, The Wombats, Yungblud

22: Glass Animals, Bastille, D-Block Europe

23: Bicep Live, Knucks, Becky Hill

Not really, it’s simply to offer an alternative to the what’s on the mainstage

The last ever act to play on it (2019) were Bastille, hardly some niche underground act.

Was AJ Tracey niche in 2020?

Wolf Alice weren’t in 2018

Haim deffo weren’t 2017

1975 in 2016

Just standard mainstream radio fodder.

2015 you may have had a slight point, when they basically turned it into a Dance tent at the end of the night. Deadmaus was hardly niche but prob a nicheish headliner booking for a non dance festival

It was simply a festival second stage. There was nothing particular or smart about it, any act of the appropriate size was billed there. It simply offered an alternative

I think a lot of this thinking that…”oh it would be way too rammed to be safe” is based on post 2019 hours experience, when there were no alternatives for people to see.

Put Aitch up against Bastille in 2022 and how are those two (big MSW) crowds split?

A lot of kids are only there because it’s an act they’ve heard of, not because they LOVE it.

There’s nothing else on, where are they meant to be? Give them another option and many will take it instead, we’ve just not seen it In action for 4 years now

I remember deadmau5 being booked in 2015 and everyone giving it a big ‘huh?’ because I felt about 5 years too late to book him headlining that tent.

Was a weird year that, can’t even Remember who Rebel Sound were, was it some sort of dance Super group?

With knife part “closing” over Liam Bizkit, they obv aimed to have big dance acts each night, while Boy Better Know headlined the dance tent one night…

Rebel sound involved Chase & Status and David Rodigan, I believe, as well as some others. I also remember a lot of surprise that they were in that slot too. Knife Party was a cool closer.
