2024 Headliners

The thing is if the general public think Olivia Rodrigo isn’t big enough to headline now you’re setting a hell of a precedent as the stadium filling acts aren’t around forever and there aren’t really that many of them.

She can't be ruled out entirely - but something about it doesn't vibe right.

I think there was a element of Olivia has really massed this with the way the whole sign up and make your interest known was done.

Let's not forget that Glastonbury got Liam as a sub after he'd done an arena tour, Finsbury Park, Belsonic, TRNSMT, IOW, Rize and Manchester Cricket Ground.

She's that young that she could easily sub it now and return to headline next time. I've never really thought she was going to top the bill but I think her subbing and going on to top Reading next year fits like a glove. Green Day, Olivia and Foo Fighters would be a top set of headliners for next year

Kendrick, Billie, Stormzy, The Cure etc aren't stadium fillers either.

Think that ties in with my sentiments. If we limit Pyramid headline slots to stadium acts only, the pool gets increasingly smaller.

Big arena acts are plenty sizable enough to headline, though the conversation then clearly needs to get into finer metrics on appeal and draw. Lewis Capaldi's obviously a big arena act, but we had him third down last year.

No idea if Rodrigo will get to stadiums, but the sheer rocket fuel on those Guts tour sales puts her firmly in my headliner bracket right now.

(Glastonbury can also gamble these things. You're going to need at least three years of complete duds to even reach a point where it wouldn't sell out these days, I'd reckon.)

I agree with your analogy. She's not a Jude Bellingham type. She's more like Rico Lewis as glasto headliner 😂

I just think even if she is offered it, she should turn it down at this point and come back on her next tour instead.

To use another football analogy, Lampard taking that Chelsea job was too soon. He should have stuck it out in the Championship for a bit longer and learned his trade a bit more.

We have to remember that headlining Glasto is easily the biggest slot any performer can get in the UK. As much as it can make you, it can also break you. I personally do not think Olivia Rodrigo has had enough live performance experience to take that risk yet. Somebody like Dua Lipa or Billie Eilish taking those slots have had hundreds of live shows across several years in all different forms to hone their craft, but O-Rod has only played around 50 actual live gigs, along with a handful of other media appearances for a few songs.

I would as shocked to see Olivia Rodrigo headline Glastonbury this year as I would if they managed to book Daft Punk. I just don't see it - Though that's not to say I don't think it will ever happen.

I’ve not seen O-Rod live, but the reviews for her Other stage show last year were amazing.

Some people are just born to perform, so whether she’s had 100 shows or 1000, it wouldn’t matter.

Since we’re on the footballing analogies, Wayne Rooney didn’t need nurturing, he was in the 1st team at 17 scoring worldies.

Some people are just ready.

While we're on this as well. Dua Lipa big enough to do it but I don't think she's going to be the groundbreaking pyramid act performance remembered for the ages. Houdini will feature in her set and it'll fall on it's arse in my view.

I want her to smash it out of the park, and hope she does, but yeah, I don't think she's going to go down as an all-timer.

But then, one man's cheese is another fellow's chalk. There's a few "legendary" headline sets at Glastonbury where I catch them back and don't get the adoration.

I've always thought that a lot of the big stadium acts are almost too big to headline Glastonbury. Not that they couldn't do it, but the negotiations around fees etc just make it much more difficult to organise and it's not as worth it to these artists.

I'd be interested to draw up a list of who falls into such a category, given that of the ten highest-grossing tours in history - unadjusted for inflation - there are nine artists.

Seven have headlined Glastonbury - Beyonce, Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, Elton John, Guns N' Roses, The Rolling Stones and U2 - while another was booked - Taylor Swift.

That only leaves Harry Styles out. Whichever way we dice it, Glastonbury has had an exceptional hit rate at getting the biggest draws of all-time in the past decade-and-a-half.

Yeah maybe you're right there Guns n Roses and Elton last year definitely plug some of those obvious gaps.

In full fairness to your point though, look at the top ten before Taylor Swift, Beyonce and Elton all crashed into it this year, and you have your AC/DC and your Madonna where it definitely feels like artists who would fight hard on the price argument. (Or your Roger Waters, who would never get a look-in.)

Roger Waters has one of the highest grossing tours of all time?
