Is that true? I know Glastonbury traditionally don’t pay over the odds like Coachella etc. but I find it hard to believe there’s a flat rate headliner fee.

Coachella maxed  out at $8 million for a headliner. That fee has been that for quite a while. If its to be believed Bad Bunny got a slight bump then he maybe got $10 mil, but aside from that everyones been getting $8 mil at the most since possibly 2015. I think McCartney got $3 mil in 2009. Radiohead got $1 mil in 2004.

Glasto having a flat fee at a certain number wouldnt be surprising especially due to the fact that they cannot afford to throw bags at the headliners. If all they can give somebody right now is maybe $2 million then the artist has to live with it. Fortunately theyre allowed to tour around the festival to make up for the supposed paltry paycheck. I dont think Billie Eilish was hurting last year with all her dates at The O2. GnR did Hyde and got their payday last week. The other thing that could factor in is if the festival will pay for some production costs and such which is another way to negotiate and offset the lower fee.

I know Glastonbury pays less than other big festivals and it has a set overall headliner budget that the big acts either have to accept or don’t play. But, surely a flat rate fee for all headliners isn’t the best way to do it?

Let’s say for example your £2million fee is correct, making the overall headliner budget £6million for headliners*… In scenario A where everyone gets a flat fee they end up paying the 1975 £2million to headline, Madonna won’t accept £2million so she doesn’t play. In scenario B the 1975 would actually do it for £750k, meaning the festival can now offer Madonna £3.25million, but the overall budget for the headliners is the same.

*figures are illustrative, I don’t think the budget is that high.

If we did know the headliner budget then we could maybe see how they would spread it out. Lets say they had £6 mil last year for Macca, Billie and Kendrick. Macca takes 3, Billie and Kendrick take 1.5 each. Sounds about right if youre trying to appease a bigger name.

But they have to pitch to these acts that 1. its for a good cause since its a charity event and 2. The "exposure" is what you really want because that translates into future album and ticket sales which can be seen as more valuable. It is an interesting argument to be had that Glasto is literally using the influencer business model when it comes to booking talent. Like I dont totally see why a Madonna is going to jump right out of her seat and sign because of the numbers Elton generated. Her tour sold out without the festival putting her on tv. I mean its literally now just become something to add to the resumé for the legacy category acts. But if she wants to do it, then she wants to do it regardless of money. Why did Taylor Swift agree for 2020 but now it would be perceived she is taking the money route cause she is making £10 mil a show? It aint that, its just bad timing per say.

Like you dont get paid for the super bowl halftime show but the airtime thats being given to you is worth  $200+ million ( 2023 rate ) and that will translate into a lot of opportunities in the future, or its supposed to.

Could it be that out of the "2 female headliners" Emily referred to that one is actually booked for the legends slot which is technically classed as the 4th headliner?

Well we had 2 female headliners in 2022 then.

Does anyone actually do this?

Yes. Going back a few years now I believe there was around 25k back in the pot. I got tickets in the normal sale. You will have an amount of people who will look at headliners and nope. The overall reaction of a booking of the 1975, dua lipa and rihanna I doubt will get people's pockets jumping for joy. Switch Rihanna for Madonna and it's a whole different game.

Taylor Swift bound people for Ireland which will be outside of Ireland too as it'll be though easier to get that mainland England will be out. Also, there will be die hard England fans that won't want to be away for the world cup. Many will be of the view that Glastonbury will happen again in 2025, but the euros is only every 4 years. And it's potentially likely some feel that 2026 will be a fallow year.

I was thinking, where is anyone getting the idea that Glastonbury pay a headliner £2m.

Except the Superbowl keep booking acts that don't require any new opportunities in the future.

There is a flat fee for headliners and it isn't a huge amount, there may be some wriggle room for absolutely stellar acts but in the main the fee offered is considerably lower than they would get for their own gigs or other festivals.

Think the biggest loss in this Taylor Swift news is the fact that Paramore are now ruled out 😞

I can see them probably being a Reading festival headliner next year maybe also doing an All Points East show (if dates don't clash with the tour)

I don’t think it is. A while back but I remember Michael talking about negotiations with different acts. There’s a ceiling which is very low compared to other festivals but there must be wiggle room.

Maybe I'm wrong but if Olivia is subbing any of these I feel it'll be Madonna. Dua Lipa - Olivia Rodrigo feels too similar.

Depeche Mode are a lock guys, get over it.

It's realistically one of the last years they could play, they still pack stadiums, since Fletcher died they have been more concerned about legacy than money, and they are the perfect counter-booking to the two other pop headliners.

I am absolutely convinced Depeche is a lock next year.

Really hope so. I’ll take one decent headliner and gladly spend the other nights elsewhere or exploring next year!

If they didn’t play this year with an enormous GSH after a sold out arena tour and their best album reviews ever.. just never going to happen is it 😞

Paramore were never going to jump over to the UK twice in the window they for Glastonbury this year. That because very obvious the closer it got.

Madonna wont do it. Her stage set is far too big and she uses too many screens and videos it would never fit on the stage and would take hours to put up. And, can you imagine her sound checking minutes before she goes on? She wouldnt risk it.

As much as it pains me to think it I think you're right. It would be amazing but I just couldn't see Madonna at Glastonbury at all. I would love it (if I got tickets) but just can't see it.

Sound checking is done in the morning at 10am for headliners.
