Regarding Elton John.

Played Sun City 07 Oct 1983 at the height of Apartheid.

Unforgivable

He talked about that in his book and said how deeply he regretted it. He gave his reasoning and I could understand it. Seems he immediately regretted it.

In 1983 Mandela had been in prison for 20 years. Elton had no excuse. I don't care how much he says he regretted it. In 83 he should just have known better. This came out a few months later, this was the mood of the time he went there. Not right, unforgivable.

Here’s the bit from his book about it. It seems it was done out of a bit of ignorance rather than anything else. There are plenty of movements that take longer to permeate one person’s consciousness than another’s especially given he was a massive drug addict at the time. I also think the concept of one mistake being unforgivable a bit of a harsh stance to take. You’ll need to read from the bottom up. No matter what order I add them in it seems to reorder them!

I loved Elton’s book. He’s actually an incredibly funny guy!

he uses a lot of words to say not very much. and he doesn't say what he did with the money(gave it to Columbia i reckon. 😛, but i think a sincere apology would  have him using the money to do some good. )

To be fair on the charity front I think Elton has probably done more than most. Given how much the AIDS epidemic has affected South Africa I suspect he has more than paid back his fee.

yeah, i know, but i also think that if he'd considered his regret in the way he describes it, then he'd get round to considering what to do with the fee.

Aye, that figure they quote at the end of Rocketman is extraordinary - bigger than a tory peers corrupt earnings.
