Headliners 2023

Have we really got another six weeks before GnR and the Arctic Monkeys are confirmed (or otherwise)? I think my head is going to explode. Having said that I dont particularly like the pyramid headline vibe (and its not because of the acts, some of whom I've seen out of choice in the run up to Glastonbury). One of my favourite games here is 'Headliner or Who' (I dont think the thread had that name but I'm going to post with that the moment the lineups are announced). i love to know what everyone thinks about the other headliners.

It's not too different, just a bit less of a build-up. The new Four out of Five is faster, strangely.

Still jars me every time I hear his 'new' voice on an old song. Will still see them on the farm unless someone I love is on another stage but jesus christ that's painful

Well, I guess the few songs I do like of theirs aren't popular then? 🙈😂

Where's Flourescent Adolescent or When The Sun Goes Down???

Well some people just can't be helped.

I was at the Stone Roses Reading 96 fiasco and am one of the cluster of people you can see down the front enjoying it. If you’re fucked up enough you can enjoy almost anything (granted, my only memory is going ‘is that a dancer in boots?’)

Thousands can't, every single England date is sold out. Elton's also playing more shows here this year than them I think and that tour's been going since 2019

This is the first time for a while they've truly satisfied all demand, some of the shows took a while to sell out (the sunday at Emirates was still pretty available for several weeks i think). Understandable the hype has fizzled out - along with their stinky albums

Do we think AM will bring out the crowd pleasers or is it gonna be Sheffields premier lounge jazz act only?

This year's set has been quite good imo - better than when i saw them in 2018. Add in 1-2 older one-offs i'd say

Imagine they did a 2 hour set, would love that - more time for good songs ontop of the normal set

Latest one is a little different - its amazing what a couple of changes can do - The View From the Afternoon as opener and Cornerstone in immediately improves things for me.

I could get on board with this one a lot more than the other, and add in just one or two surprises/lesser played songs and it could be really good even for people like me who don't like AM that much.

Not loving the new 505 though, but it could be the recording quality on that video. Maybe I just don't like bands evolving...

Ooh, actually 6 weeks doesn't sound so bad to me.  In my head we're months and months away from any proper info, so 1.5 months is manageable.  Just had a look at the thingy and the first lineup posters have all been in March recently: 2016: Mar 29; 2017: Mar 30; 2019: Mar 15; 2020: Mar 12; 2022: Mar 4th.  Hopefully that trend of generally a bit earlier each year continues!

Any idea roughly when they start releasing individual stage lineups after that?  (appreciate that's over several weeks)

Usually May time. The good news is there usually will be a few announcements before the poster drops. Think we all just need a little patience (and it doesn't have to be by Guns n Roses)

Usually much closer to the festival, May I think? It feels agonisingly slow between each individual poster as well, but I am very impatient!

Awesome - I might just about work my way through Elton's back catalogue in 6 weeks, but a bit more variety is always good

Thanks both, that sounds about right.  Not been since 2019 but the impatience rings a bell, not just you! 😄  I know this is the headliner thread, but I'm always keen to get the lineup for Avalon and some of the smaller stages, would rather be spending my time there

Yep I already have my 1 pyramid headliner in Elton and so am actually keen to not like the other 2. 1 night at the Pyramid at headliner time is more than enough for me. Have done a couple of Avalon Headliners in my time.

Jesus what's with that contrived voice? Fucks sake.

Has anyone ever heard this man speak genuinely, from his heart, without some kind of alt-ego w*nk pretence?

We never get much in January, it's a slow month for the industry in general. There aren't too many big gigs or album releases and everyone is skint from Christmas.

It's usually in February when the Brits and NME awards roll around when tongues start to loosen a little.

Basically January is a shit month in almost every respect!!

So if it is AM/GNR/EJ that’s 3 headliners that have been selling out stadiums in the months leading up to the festival.

When has that ever happened before?

I can only think of possibly 2016 (Muse, Coldplay, Adele) and 2011 (U2, Coldplay, Beyoncé).

But while Adele clearly was a stadium sized act in terms of popularity, was she doing them in 2016.

Was Beyoncé already a stadium act in 2011 or did that come after?

2009 is close but I don’t think the Neiler was a stadium act at that point (if ever?)
