Friday - Arctic Monkeys

Saturday - Peter Kay (stand up set)

Sunday - Taylor Swift (stream from US gig night before)

Something for everyone

Always wondered why it'd couldn't be Peter Kay or some other horrendously shit comedian - we keep banging on about how it's not just a music festival 🙂

Didn't La Roux basically admit as much at one point?  Having parents in show business can only be an advantage, but only from the point of view of accessing the right people.  If the music is shit, it will still fail.

About now someone should mention bono's kid is in inhaler

But equally if you believe that having parents involved in media in any capacity doesn't give you a massive leg up - regardless of how talented and hard working you are - then I've got a bridge to sell you.

It's a bit tiresome that you keep banging on about the media

The main benefit in this case, as many have mentioned, would be that the parents had a degree of wealth and therefore presumably he had the luxury of time.

Equally tiring and myopic that people seem to think that just because you're not directly involved in the music business, being in an adjacent industry confers no benefit. Let's ignore this 1975 example and speak in generalities - you think that if an actor no matter how big or small asks an agent if they know anyone who represents musicians they're going to turn around say no and tell them to fuck off? How do you think Lilly Allen got her breaks?

Must just be a weird coincidence that so many artists have famous parents.

but far more artists who are famous do not have famous parents.

Very few artists with famous parents go on to have very successful carers. I can think of a few actors (Laura Dern, liza minnelli) but not much in other fields. Often they turn out to be duds like Will Smith's son

Voice over for multiple TV shows, has starred in multiple movies, supported Bieber and J Cole on tour - what a dud.

This makes no sense as an argument - the amount of generally famous artists far outweigh the amount of people trying to be famous who also have famous parents. As above I'm not saying that it doesn't mean you're not talented if you have famous parents just that it confers a significant benefit because of the contacts it will get you.

Probably has contacts though and lives comfortably. Which allows them to spend years grinding as a band with ease to finally get a hit (most people would have to work and have to give up), which given a quick wikipedia scan is basically what they did given they've somehow been around for years before they released anything.

Of course money helps but that's a different thing. You don't have to have famous parents to have rich parents.

Inhaler can be quite good and you can also recognise they had a huge leg up, both can mutually exist

I agree. I just don't think we should be disputing the privilege. I like Clairo and she quite clearly got a boost, nothing wrong with it as long as you don't lie about it - which i think Matt Healy does when she masquerades his band as working class darlings.

I don't think he's ever done this? And Clairo / Inhaler are very different from your mum being on loose women for a music industry start up.

his mum does though i think was the point

I think he does this in the way that he acts and behaves in interviews, makes it seem like the band came from nothing despite having loads of resources and privilege to get it going. I'll leave you with this quote from a guardian interview and I'm done on the matter

https://www.theguardian.com/music/2016/nov/11/matt-healy-the-1975-pretentious-not-apologising-interview

From the age of four, he played drums with his father. His parents were friendly with any number of musicians, who would encourage young Matty. “My dad’s mates were in bands. Brian Johnson from AC/DC, Rick Wakeman, Mark Knopfler and Jeff Lynne, who’s an absolute genius. I’ve got a funny story about him. My mum and I went to his house with a friend called Phil Collinson, who’s a producer. We introduced Phil to Jeff, and he kept asking him, ‘How’s your dad doing?’ and Phil kept saying, ‘Yeah, he’s fine.’ ‘Is he still living in Switzerland?’ ‘No, he still lives in Coventry.’ And Jeff Lynne took me over to the side and he said, ‘Is he Phil Collins’ son?’ I said, ‘No, his name’s Phil Collinson.’ Then he said, ‘Thank fuck, because I hate Phil Collins!’”

Absolutely not starting a rumour about them but posted about Imagine Dragons in another thread and it got me wondering if people think they're big enough to headline? Like them or not, they are so much bigger than when they played in 2014.

Other headliner level maybe?

I do like Inhaler. Does anyone else think Inhaler also had the advantage of being able to just use old U2 track's that they never released. As well as the advantage of money and contacts, it also looks like they had songs/blue print of a sound aswell. Most of their stuff is just early U2.
