There are many hugely popular artists that I know nothing by and the small amounts of exposure I have had to them don't make me inclined to want to know them anymore.

This!

Don't know why it's so difficult to understand that some people don't get to hear certain bands and/or songs.

Welcome back @Skip997I for one quite like hearing your alternative views on things.

And will happily admit I have some probably quite shocking gaps in my musical knowledge as well. I wasn't brought up by music lovers.

You can include me in the Depeche Mode shout from the last page.

I know 3 songs of theirs - Enjoy the silence, Personal Jesus and Just can't get enough.

I find it utterly bonkers when folk on here suggest them as headliners.

Being 33 though that's perhaps not a surprise though given their heyday was seemingly many moons before I entered the world.

Everyone has their musical blind spots, either deliberately or otherwise! I quite enjoy the weird disconnect when you enjoy a song for the first time and then realise that seemingly everyone else knows it. Like, how has this passed me by for so long??

Massively true. Same as films, books and any other media.  The one that seems to keep popping up is that I've never seen Shawshank, for example.

Depending on your exposure through friends, where you socialise, what radio stations you do or don't listen to, it's really easy to bypass music. And yep, I love then discovering it!

That's the joy of it - and also why being proud of the gaps is such a weird flex.

Music is a pretty broad church. I like to think I am pretty knowledgeable about music but every day Heardle from every era reminds me that the list of stuff I don't know is more than equal to that which I know. There are many hugely popular artists that I know nothing by and the small amounts of exposure I have had to them don't make me inclined to want to know them anymore.  It's ok for people to know and like different things. It's what Glastonbury encourages. They wouldn't have small tents in other areas of the festival if the main stages were all that was important.

Of course it‘s fine for people to like different things, I certainly don’t like any of the Guns N’ Roses songs I mentioned! Not suggesting anyone should go and listen to them, just very surprised that people have managed to live their life without being subjected to Sweet Child of Mine. I suppose I grew up not knowing any Prince songs so it can happen but yeah, just very odd to me.

I think the old truism really applies here - the more you learn about music, the more you realise how little you know...

I don't think it's any weirder than the little frisson of pride you have for being into bands or whatever that no-one else has discovered yet. It's kinda the flipside of the same coin.

What I find weirdest of all is how...involved people seem to get over other's positions on such things.  But then I'm an old hippy, so what do I know?

Prince is a very good one, couldn't have named you a Prince song until I was well into my teens.

I genuinely didn't realise Prince was a proper guitarist until the rock & roll hall of fame vid of while my guitar gently weeps was doing the rounds.

Agreed. I've never knowingly heard a Harry Styles song in my life. Nor Blackpink, Doja Cat, Fred Again or many of the other artists regularly mentioned on here. I don't feel like I'm missing out - I've got thousands of records. There's only so many hours in the day you can spend listening to music - you can't possibly hear it all!

also just because you have not heard of or could not name songs from a band, does not mean they should not headline as some people seem to imply.

i couldnt name or even say what the 1975 sound like, but still think they could headline.

Prince is also a great example, someone i thought was just big in America like some country artists

Yes, it is very sad. It appears if you disagree too much with the sneering bully's who seem to want to police some of these threads then your opinion is not valid and is to be ridiculed.

Couldn't agree more. I guarantee those people wouldn't be half as arsey in person. There's something about forums, this more than most, that brings out the worst in people.

Good to see you back @Skip997

I have massive gaps in my knowledge of 80s/90s pop English speaking music, as I grew up in a country extremely proud of it's chanson. Didn't know anything about Diana Ross after the Supremes. I can name one or maybe two Rod Stewart songs. S Club 7 who's that? And I love Glastonbury. Why? Because there's freaking 100 stages for me to choose from. Why would I care that stage X has something I don't know/don't like? Or I will discover something new, or I will just find out something else. That is the beauty of Glastonbury. I will complain about line ups for smaller festivals where if you don't like any of the two artists playing at a certain time, and there's no pretty hill or wooded area or bonfire area to chill at, well that sucks. Not at Glasto.
