Headliners 2023

I do think there's a good chance a lot of people who don't spend their days on forums like this will be completely baffled by the GnR announcement.

Saw a friend recently who pays zero attention to any of the speculation and he was excitingly talking up Little Simz as a Glastonbury headliner for this summer, pointing to the Stormzy booking and the need for more female headliners as reasons for believing it will happen.

I didn't have the heart to tell him it's GnR instead. If you've spent weeks on here debating possible lineups, you know there's no way Little Simz would be considered big enough to headline the Pyramid yet. But for everyone out there in their own little music bubble, there's going to be a more relevant, more interesting name they think could be headlining and GnR is going to feel like a bit of a slap in the face by comparison.

(Apart from the people whose music bubble is GnR-heavy - imagine they'll be thrilled)

Little Simz isn't even remotely close, not close to Stormzy yet

The bold is just inevitable, happens at festivals everywhere. I'm sure loads of my group would love the strokes or loyle carner but its not happening and they'll live

I think your friend is an outlier here.

I mean - Simz wouldn't be a contender to top the Other Stage (yet), let alone the Pyramid, and that's ignoring the fact she already played a prominent slot at the festival last year. In terms of pop culture awareness, she's a fraction of the level Stormzy was at.

Not to come across as holier-than-thou when talking to people about Glastonbury, but spending far too long on this forum does lead to some interesting/amusing/awkward conversations when people come out with wild speculation for things like headliners because they 'have a feeling' or otherwise.

I have literally turned down bets with friends in the past even for acts I know are touring over Glasto weekend just because I don't want to rob them and/or break hearts. Can't decide if it's a blessing or a curse to be so aware of Glastonbury potentials sometimes.

Oh I know - 100%. Doubt many people are hoping or expecting for Little Simz to headline but it made me realise that lots of less-informed people will have names they'd suggest that are new or different and GnR will probably feel quite unexciting by comparison.

Have the same thing, people I know expect the remaining headliners to be more in vein of Kendrick or Billie to even out the old booking of Elton. They're still throwing things like Taylor Swift, Dave and Harry Styles around as their wish lists.

I'm the same with Mrs 4AM.  She doesn't follow any of the gossip/forums etc. I've told her the Pyramid 3, but she keeps randomly suggesting names for Other/Legends and I just keep shooting them down.  Feel like a proper killjoy.

IMO she's actually streets ahead of Stormzy in terms of quality of output and far more material but yep in this patriarchal society she isn't as well known.

I'd go along with this, but don't think it's a patriarchy issue.  Stormzy just hit a zeitgeist and his non-musical endeavours, political opinions made him a good choice.  Simz is incredibly talented, far more prolific and creative IMO, but strikes me as someone who is in it 100% for the art form and can't ignore her muse.  There have been a good few acts like that and they never seem to break through to really huge success as they don't play the fame game.

You can blame patriarchy, but you can also point to a lack of hits.

I love her and have her albums on repeat, but she hasn’t a single tune as popular as Shut Up, Big For Your Boots or Vossi Bop.

And you don’t top the big one without the bangers.

I don't know enough about either of them or their genres to say whether this is correct. Not gonna pretend to know more than I do.

What I do know is that Simz would smash that slot on the pyramid. 2 fisted, pummelling, smash. She's a boss!

Macca had already formed The Beatles the year Axl Rose was born.

A couple of years before.

The Who had formed

As had The Stones

Stevie wonder was a recording artist

The Cure formed 10 years before GnR

As did U2

Metallica similar

Neil Young was a dinosaur when GnR were signed

Springsteen was already a veteran then too

Anyway its no big thing. Just a big rock band playing songs for a couple of hours.

re little simz, never gave reasons i know shes far more acclaimed but think i'd agree on the hits thing. plenty of artists are more acclaimed and never get to the biggest slots.

Stormzy other sub is basically the same as WH headline so maybe thats a comparison of where they are both at worth looking at. at that rate its simz 2024
