I remember when Glasto gave The Darkness a major slot some time ago (20 years or so?) and I thought that they had totally lost it. Even then.

Opened The Other one year didn't they. And then incurred the wrath of GFL by saying along the lines of, "We'll be headline material next year and Glastonbury will be begging for us but won't be able to afford us". And then they headlined IOW next year for a million or something iirc? The cocaine had got to Justin at the time and I think he seriously thought he was it.

He has since apologised for his arrogance and stated that he realises it was a massive, massive, possible career trajectory changing faux pas and is full of regret.

Would love to see them back on the farm.

I saw The Darkness at HMV Apollo about ten years ago and enjoyed it. Always thought they’d make for a fun early Pyramid or Other Stage slot

They are just a fucking great live act. They make an effort and just, "get it". That is how you put on a rock show. And they certainly are "fun". Don't take themselves too seriously and often hilarious lyrics. Should be selling out stadiums. Seriously under rated.

I think their songcraft is world class and would argue that they've written more bangers than GnR.

(I may have gone a bit "Stan" there).

Actually quite tempted by the undercard to break my, "Never Hyde Park/BST Again", rule.

The Darkness opened the Pyramid in 2003 (back when it was a 10.30am slot!), and the BBC gave them a load of coverage, shot a feature following them arriving by helicopter etc., and they covered Street Spirit (as Radiohead were headlining the next day).

The headlining the next year stuff - that quote sounds about right. It was Reading/Leeds they headlined, but urban legend has it that they near enough verbally agreed to headline V then parlayed that into said million quid offer from R&L, pissing off a few people in the process. I remember one of the reviews of the Reading show opening with “This shouldn’t be happening”… they had a massive inflatable set of tits that Justin rode on at one point right?

Justin Hawkins was great at the Taylor Hawkins tribute gig at Wembley last year, doesn’t take himself seriously, good fun and a great voice

Him and his brother aren't bad guitar players either. And their drummer is of world class stock.

Justin's also a great presenter. His youtube channel is the only youtube channel I regularly watch.

I don't remember the inflatable tits at Leeds, but I do remember them doing a new song about meat.

In good company so.

15 years since Arctic Monkeys did anything.

45 years since Elton did anything.

Absolutely - I was amazed when I started looking Elton's old albums - all he's ever done he did a loooong time ago.  Being joined by Blondie and Yusuf on Sunday, might be a record for number of pensioners on one stage.

Which nicely illustrates what truly appalling bookings they are.

I like GnR but think they'll lose the crowd for large parts. Theres lots of periods of long noodling guitar solos and the like in their set which they would need to trim down.

No interest at all in the other two.

I am a fan, but agree with this. They have an amazing two hour set, struggling to finds its way out of a three-hour set.

But, for me one of the dullest parts is Knockin' On Heaven's Door which is unnecessary in so many ways and unnecessarily long when they play it, yet may well end up being a highlight for many of the casuals.

Perfect time to wonder over to the cider bus and back between the good songs!

I reckon they’ll get 2 hours 15 or 2 hours 30 - lose some of the random solos, lose possibly Coma (which is a cracking track but will lose the crowd likely) and one or 2 others and pack the set with the rest of their set list and we have a seriously classic set on our hands if it all goes well.

slash is my favourite rock guitar player. He deserves his rightful place in Glastonbury el points Folklore. Duff too!

One of the first on the chopping block surely? I’d love to be wrong though.

I suppose their set is already pretty filled with covers that they’re more well known for - Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door, Live and Let Die etc - so it might get cut, but in terms of songs that will actually get the crowd going it certainly trumps a lot of other stuff in their set so here’s hoping.
