G22 Retrospective

I actually thought it was one of the strongest years I've been to in almost 20 years of attending. Felt like almost every act I saw brought their A game, didn't see many duff sets at all. The crowds (from my experience) were all friendly and up for it, didn't see too many dickheads about. Had a great Saturday afternoon getting drunk with a pair of venerable eFesters....

Wet Leg felt like being part of something huge (obviously being down the front helped), Simz smashed her WH headline slot, I saw great performances from First Aid Kit, Yard Act, Fontaines DC, Jack White...

Weirdly the only act I feel any real sense of disappointment about was Macca, not sure why but something just didn't click for me that night.

Good fun - Saturday night post macca was the best time i've ever had at a festival seeing Four Tet, Calvin and then heading to the SE Corner.

Feel like pretty much everyone I saw was great, i'd go against the above and say Wet Leg were the worst i saw, was just so far back wish i'd seen Mel C with Blossoms instead to be honest.

Definitely seems like there was a massive disconnect between those at the back and those at the front.

I do get it because after WL I had to leave the crowd to go the loo, by the time I'd gotten to the toilets and back Confidence Man had already started and I was stuck at the very back and just unable to get into it.

Gave up after 10 minutes and went to see FAK instead.

Macca was one of the best gigs I've ever attended. The build up, the excitement, the feel good factor, the scale, the atmosphere, the hits, the special guests. Hard to top all of that personally.

2022 was my first Glastonbury and it planted a bug in me. Back next year and excited to experience the festival with a tad more experience behind me and the Mrs.

Liked: weather, easy shifts, Macca, the run on the Pyramid on Friday, Kacey, Years and Years

Longed for: I missed my US artists - thought there was a lack of old school acts generally.

Lacked: volunteer camping spaces very busy, we were in the overflow and our friends were in the overflow overflow

Learned: I'm getting quite old for the logistics and the hill at the Park is too much for my neuro issues. My limits generally.

I think all in it was my favourite year so far. It was my girlfriends first time going and she loved it, so seeing her amazed by everything other than the queue to get in was a nice way to do it. I saw less acts than I usually would and had gaps between most acts rather than running from stage to stage which was a lot more relaxed.

McCartney was fantastic. I enjoyed the first half but the second half was ridiculous, best thing I've seen live. Most of my other highlights were acts I was planning to see but was surprised at just how much I enjoyed them, particularly First Aid Kit, Turnstile, Olivia Rodrigo and the Sunday lunchtime double bill of Just Mustard and Dakhabrakha, which was one of my favourite parts of the weekend. I really enjoyed Idles too, I had gone off them a bit but they were amazing and that Other stage set really rekindled my interest in them.

Only big disappointments for me were Wet Leg and Diana Ross, though I was just too far back for Wet Leg. The only other disappointment was Overmono but I think that was me not being in the mood for that rather them them. The Libertines were rubbish too but that's hardly unexpected.

more than anything, the 1-2 of Amyl and the sniffers followed by Turnstile at the JP was great - really energetic, great crowd, and the kind of thing you come away from beaming and full of the joys. The highlight of my weekend 👍 and more so now there's been a bit of distance from it all happening

Spot on. Really needed the injection of energy from these two sets. A classic Sunday 1-2 to get me over the finish line

Being one of the first to get into the Temple on the Thursday night was a real moment. The mad dash to get in to see the needle drop on the first set and standing in the bleachers as the hoards flock towards the booth is always fun, but with the gap between 2019 and 2022, it felt a little more exciting. Thoroughly recommend it as an experience.

Pet Shop Boys were my unexpected highlight banger after banger. Friday was a crazy day for us and by headliner time I was dead on my feet. Learned from that and made sure Saturday and Sunday to have some more relaxed music and some of them ended up being lovely moments like Yasmin Williams on the Park, Lianne La Havas on the Other stage.

Musical highlights - Pet Shop Boys, Sleaford Mods, Billy Nomates, Hollie Cook with Horseman (Truth stage), Bob Vylan, Warm Dusher (Truth Stage).

Musical disappointments - Little Simz (yet again), Mad Professor, Chase and Status b2b with whoever (can't remember) doing a non Jungle set on Arcadia. Lack of DnB/Jungle, well I couldn't find it.

Overall - overcrowded, disappointing lack of vibe, poor unfriendly punters (compared with other years), too many people on the "wrong drugs", not enough people on the "right drugs". One of my least favourite Glastonbury's.

Thanks for the happy memories.

By far my favourite year. Best weather, incredible lineup, really good group I went with.

I think I saw a lot of people this year I’ve never seen before. Which is rare for someone who goes to a lot of events.

2022 will be a big one to top.

This is a good point actually. Other than Idles, all of my highlights that I mentioned above were acts I saw for the first time. The lineup certainly felt very fresh to me, probably more than the original 2020 lineup actually.

My and my groups first time going, I was so excited in the build up, up until I was almost at the entrance when my trolly broke. But that was the only downside. Tbh even that wasn't too bad, as it was only the steering that was effected.

Kendrick was incredible, audibly gasped when the torches came on during N95. Little Simz was excellent, Olivia Rodrigo really surprised me, had some great late night fun at floating points, shygirl and some random DJ's.

I never ended up spending much time at the Park so I'd like to for 2023.
