2023 line up thread

Was looking hard to budget for the days off required for this with my brother's wedding thrown into the mix this year and the big question was would we feel like we're missing out if we didn't go.  I'm sure I'd find stuff in here I'd like if I did the research but if I walk away now I'll be no wiser.

Hmm.

Feels very... underpowered? Maybe there's a couple of things coming in the second announcement, as in a Garden headliner and Big Top Sunday, and it's not disastrous (Nina Nastasia! Indigo Sparke!) plus there's always the likelihood of hearing something great in the coming months and finding they're one of those names on the EOTR bill you'd never heard of before, but I don't see the usual strength in depth, there's acts billed higher than before who don't seem to have done anything. As I kind of posted last night I can see why Future Islands are headlining, they're due a new album and are playing Noel Gallagher's big outdoor Manchester show a week earlier, but it feels like a reputational booking as headliner. UMO isn't intensely exciting either.

Theres no way you're familiar with all those acts.

Nope! That's the exciting part. Loads of people here mentioning names I've never heard of in my life as points of real excitement, which is great.

Just nothing there that is immediately grabbing me at all. Those that I am familiar with I dislike.

Will have to listen to the acts I don't know on the undercard before I decide, but I can't justify spending £200 on 4 acts - all of which have played before (Wilco, Ezra, Caitlin Rose & Sweet Baboo).

Actually I missed Nina Nastasia & Gretel Hanlyn on first look, so that's 6 I'd like to see, but I still need to find 5 or 6 undiscovered gems to make it worthwhile.

Going down the list there's a lot of rap acts, as if making up for there being barely any last year following Simz and co's triumphs in 2021. Couple of drone/doom metal acts too. And a surprising number of Australians.

That's good as Australian is my favourite music genre.

I am sure I will have a good time and a lot of lower down acts will be great/good to get into, but initial reaction a bit disappointed with the top billing stuff. There are a lot of acts that have been swirling round on here I would have been way more excited by.
