Areas that would benefit from a "revamp"

Absolutely this. Weird experiences that stay with you for ages. You think about it weeks later with a straight head and say to yourself "did I actually fucking witness that?!". The SEC has become a little 'sterile' in the past few years. I used to love wandering through, interacting with the characters in the different areas. Was mind-bending in a good way, if you were in a certain state of mind. Peaked in 2011 for me with the "infected" theme

Glad you and Sawdusty surfer are backing me up on this.

It's years since I've seen a properly weird occurance at Glastonbury, as for characters...

Where's all the spontaneous creativity gone?

The Pyramid hasn't changed for years and it's boring now.  They should change it into a dodecahedron or a hexagonal prism.

With the Orb b2b The KLF 12 hour set

And stay away from the kool-aid

I agree. And that's coming from someone who stupidly spurned numerous opportunities to attend in the 90s, only to see the light a decade later. Just managed to catch the last days of Trash City. The first versions of Shangri-la captured that edgier spirit a lot more than they do now. Things evolve of course, that's also important, but not at the cost of staying true to your roots. Fuck it, bring back dogs on string, I say!

The growth in numbers on site and the popularity of the SE corner has gone hand in hand with its reduction in quality, sadly.
too many people now to do micro venues. At least you dont queue to enter any more but i was more than happy to end my saturday at the wow stage in SH - nowhere near as busy and full on as SE corner and brilliant music.

side note i just think the festival has expanded ever so slightly too much in terms of numbers now. Its harder and harder to find something great thats not rammed. You have to really zig when others zag.

the whole late night scene all across site has gone hand in hand with electronic music being the big / popular genre amongst under 30s. People are buying tickets just for late night stuff! Victim of its own success. Theres not much late night stuff thats not DJs these days. I like it but can see why others dont & want a bit more variety.

I remember the folk I was with in 2010 on Saturday trying to get their heads round the things they'd seen the night before down there.  I personally think that 2009's Trash City and the first year of Shangri La in 2010 were the peak and we've been on a bit of a slow slide since.

I want the teams behind Shangri La and the Unfairground to take over Silver Hayes, bring it kicking and screaming into the century of the fruitbat.

Sadly I'm too old, boring and crowd averse for it to be my thing anymore, but I want it for everyone else, for their Glastonbury to contain that insanity and that sense of seeing something you would never see anywhere else and as you say, you are left wondering if it was real or some crazed drug dream of a frazzled brain whose neurons were firing randomly. Glastonbury 22 was a bit of a let down for me, one I forgave because of the circumstances but for the future of the festival it feels like they need a bit of shock and awe.

I dunno, I think some of that weirdness is still there elsewhere. Specifically thinking about the Alien mermaid singing about D.I.V.O.R.C.E in the park stage last year.

This is cloud cuckoo land innit?

It's nice that there's excitable chat about something, but in a year where they've needed to increase prices to cover the massive increase of infrastructure prices and the pandemic hit to their reserves, do you seriously think they can afford big budget revamps?

Changes don't necessarily automatically mean big budget.

I imagine the silver Hayes revamp this year came out at about cost neutral.

I'm a broken record when it comes to it but making better use of fewer stages with better production if done correctly would revitalise some areas.

Oh 2011 SEC was sooooooooo good. I think I tried a couple more times after that, but not being a big EDM fan it lost its appeal.

Isn't it interesting that the conversation is quite SEC/SH focused? Would anyone dare to ask for a revamp of the Green Fields ? Acoustic, come on guys I know lots of you wouldn't set foot there (which probably means you don't care).

For me the Park needs to decide what it is in terms of identity. It's not Emily's pet project anymore.

It also ignores many of the changes that happened last year - when there was new venues in the Common and Shangri-la.

It’s a forum.

Obviously not that memorable, considering no one's mentioned them.

The festival does tweak areas each year, often due to budget pressures, which particularly in 2022 was widely accepted.

There's probably not one person who thinks they have the time, resources or budget to revamp all of the areas that might need it. It's just a chat thread. All theoretical, aspirational. Nothing serious.

And SH changed massively last year. And B9 the year before with Icon. I think UFG is the most desperate for changes.

I spent a good chunk of the Wednesday night in Platform 23, which was new last year - a two story venue with an old tube carriage embedded in it (I presume recycled from the Earache Stage)
