Areas that would benefit from a "revamp"

By making all main stages special they lose character and in some cases become less functional (see Arcadia), like tomorrowland has all their crazy stages but they serve no real purpose.

JP is just a tent at the end of the day, pyramid is pointy and WH and Park are just standard festival stages. Its more the music on Other thats the issue i think for some people, its not as like genre consistent i guess as WH for example

I'm not really sure what that first sentence means? How can a stage lose it's character if it's made 'special'?

If every stage is 'cool' then the ones that really stick out would be far less exciting. Imagine every stage looked like IICON or Arcadia - two stages that make the pyramid look boring as shit

I've had a couple of lovely afternoons at Strummerville but never thought of it for the evening.

Appreciate this, thank you!

Evenings at Strummerville are magic!

Do at least go through the Green fields at night too, it's all dark with bonfires and small groups of people doing more ... magic.

Try Strummerville or Small World in Green Futures.

Just two possibilities

I love Small World. By chance I saw a Canadian singer there last year. Beautiful voice, sounded like Joni Mitchell. I always make sure I go there at least once or twice.

I’ve never been to the new Strummerville at night, I definitely should go. Probably more for the atmosphere and the view, I have to say I’ve yet to see any acts there I’d rate, maybe I’m just unlucky.

I really liked it too. The old glade was over subscribed past mid afternoon and I prefer it with room to dance! Keep the big names in the new glade tent I say.

Agree. I thought all changes to the Glade were ideal.

It was a return to what it was 20 years ago, dancing under the trees but still had the option of big acts in the moved main stage. Ideal. Also making Spike bar a chill out area better (we don't need another sound bleed). I don't think there's any need for Spaceport/ and Lovebullets they always felt plonked there from another festival.

Lets not confuse main stages with small tents or area focal points/ DJ booths.

I don't know about this, Boomtown has every stage be it's own thing and the vibe is incredible.

Fair enough

Just not sure what can really be done with Other - the festival needs large stages. Are we thinking something like the creamfields arc main stage or something? The one at Melt festival with those cranes looks cool but thats stuff thats already there - its a field in somerset haha

Yeah i agree. Im not sure the stages fall under the scope of "what areas need a revamp?"... they are not really areas they are just a field with a stage in. They can make the stages more elaborate but that doesn't change much, people are there for the bands not the stage.

Areas like Shangri la need a complete overhaul in my opinion. Other than the gas tower nothings changed in years and its a bit half arsed. Budget and permission may be an isssue though.

Grand Central at Boomtown was it's second stage gives a good idea of what's possible.  (It probably is literally using the park stage shell).

Their main stage, origin, was just for DJs but the production on that was incredible.

It just adds extra layers to performances that can be used. Eg for dancers, confetti, pyro, water, other special effects etc etc.

That makes it so much more than just watching a band in a field.

Edit-obviously caveat that with that this isn't accounting for budget etc.

I think different people have a different opinion on what counts as needing change etc. imo other is completely fine as theres nothing wrong with it and does the job vs some areas like Unfairground that are just in tatters

I guess once you make the shell once its all good to go for future years.

Obviously would be a lot of work / no doubt difficult to make happen with artists but maybe a B-stage would be a cool idea. Not every artist has to use it of course but it would certainly be unique and no other festival I can think of has one. Might even help attract some of the more show based artists to the festival.

I'd love to see these huge 'dance festival facade' style stages - if it was to happen I think it would have happened by now to be honest.

Weirdly i think that's kind of the idea with Unfairground, some sort of twisted dystopian fairground, meant to slightly freak people out.  But it's never really worked and is well past it's sell by date.

May have to try this.  Seen 3/4 acts there over the years but always in the day.

Yup. Strummerville is a schlep but it's good vibes up there. And always worth wandering the green futures area after dark, late music and interesting people abound.

Does toad hall go late as well or am I imagining that?

All this discussion of revamps for areas has made me wonder if there's going to be quite significant site changes this year.

1) Williams green is going and the accessible campsite is moving.

2) Shangri la's call out talks about microvenues, they'd all but disappeared recently.

3) Rumours about arcadia and the helicopter

4) Rumours that the JP stage could be renamed.

5) The silver Hayes revamp didn't quite hit the mark (I think that's the consensus here?), But they now have the two new stages that could be used maybe in a different configuration.

6) BBC introducing was basically it's own area this year but didn't seem to click much either (closed at 8pm...) and has passed by these discussions entirely.

7) We're due another stage in the SE corner when they fix the mouldy boxes of genesis

8. Pressure on crowding through the official council reports they'll have to address.

The huge price increase doesn't actually give them much (or any?) extra money but I think that gives a pressure (expectation?) that there its not all the same. If money's tight and they can't add more they'll have to redo what they've got. That leads to think we could be getting some major site changes.

A fair summary, I'd say.

5) I think the general consensus with SH is that 22 was a vast improvement but maybe the whole area needs a complete rethink, rather than just a couple stages and tents randomly plonked together. Doubt we'll see much difference this year, but that's ok.

I'd love to see numerous changes get made. They're not all going to land every time but I'd prefer they tried to push the envelope a bit each year, rather than sticking with safe bets. Fuck the lineup, give me the map!

You've heard of a fairground... but what if there was an unfairground? Pretty twisted, right?

Strummerville at night is a great experience, especially if you nab a comfy seat at the fire.  I suppose the main problem is the clashes elsewhere. A great stop off point before heading up to  WV.
