UEF
Never knew Carlsberg were anything to do with it. And only associate Brothers with Glastonbury as, when I first went, it was one of the few places in the UK you could actually buy it. These days people would be forgiven for wondering why supermarket/corner shop cider is available at the festival - in fact, they probably don't think anything of it. Fair point but what I'm trying to highlight is the slippery slope of corporate sponsorship. Its a necessary evil and what makes Glastonbury special, is how they balance sponsorship with control while also maintaining the festivals identity. The best example is the volume of other drinks brands - particularly local - available at the festival. Normally a drinks sponsorship like Carlsberg would severely restrict the sale of competitor brands. Looking across the waters to Electric Picnic in Ireland (run by Festival Republic so I'm guessing similar set up at Reading, Leeds, etc.) you've got a balance of power that has shifted far more towards sponsorship through the controls they have released. Heineken's sponsorship affords them so much control that Heineken brands is all you'll really be able to see/buy (and at an overly inflated price). They run entire areas/stages while also being the reason the festival has extremely strict security between the campsites and the main festival arena (which can cause awful queues depending on the time of day)

Doesn't mean they couldn't do more though, and contribute to surrounding towns etc. And to promote renewable energy to all the glasto goers, which is what sponsors are for, innit 💡 Edited February 26, 2023 by Lucy F
