Well, yes. I do love 'hardore' outdoor timber furniture, but those bits (which I can no longer see a photo of on the screen, for some reason) just don't appeal to me. However, it's each to their own.

I do like solid oak beams (as in, really like). My house is constructed using them. The property is dated 1580, and you can see where they have either used old (ship type) beams for its construction, or when refurbing many many years ago;

yeah you look at the initial photo and see how it develops as we get towards the festival .... will look nothing like it does now . ive got a fair idea what the end result will be but wont spoil it

I got very lucky with this house. Very lucky indeed. It is actually one third of the original medieval manor house. I have owned a few houses, but not one of the others seemed like 'home'. This one does. To think of all the people who either lived here or passed through in 0ver 400 years, is mind boggling, at times. Oh, and it used to be a pub in the 1800's sometime too.

Anyway, back to timber - I also have a project which involves heavy duty timber. @Sawdusty surfer - I was just wondering if you would give me a 'piggy back'. It is, without doubt, the fact that this project of mine would never ever get done, really. However, if you were to allow me to partially jump on board 'YOUR' thread with my own progress, then there may actually be some such progress. Would that be OK?

So independent, more like a cat than a dog. We had to put a tag on his collar saying "I walk myself in Thurlbear Woods" as we constantly got phone calls from people saying that they had 'found' him. 

He could never understand why he wasn't allowed to do his thing at Glastonbury.....

Well, I haven't made a jot of progress on my 'piece' since my foolish suggestion to jump on board too. However, there's time enough. I'm writing for another reason though. I happen to have an old friend over (he arrived Sunday night) to stay with us for a few days. I also happened to be off my head with him last night on a lovely mcat, speed, and ket combo around our external fire. During the course of the few words that we were able to communicate with each other, I mentioned your work. It was the table and chairs (that I think you might have sold now) which people were allowed to sit on at Glastonbury. He told me that he recalled sitting on the seats with a mutual friend. He then went onto say that he thinks the owner of such chairs (you) was a part of a 'collective' known as the Rinky Dink Crew. So, I was just wondering - is he accurate in his recollections?

I've made a start. I have photographed the elements of my project to show you. I got the timbers free from someone who wanted them gone. The two metal bits of industrial kit I bought for about £40 (can't quite recall). The project? To combine the two in order to make a fairly funky (to my mind) table. The metal brackets off the main support slide up and down, and can be fixed at certain points. This means that any potential table could be used at differing heights.

A shamefully unabashed bit of timber porn for 'Sawdusty' (I noticed that I spelt that wrong the last time. However, given that I'm from Birmingham, it might be mnemonically accurate!).

I bought it off an architect for a song a fair few years ago. He himself had nabbed it from a commission that he was working on, many years before that. It is the lower 'baffer' (a word I have just made up to fill a description gap. There is probably a more accurate name for these) of a canal lock gate. It is really quite heavy, but I don't know the hardwood timber that it is made from*

 

* I actually got an 'O' Level grade result of 'U' in woodwork. For those not familiar with the 'O' Level rating system, a 'U' stands for 'Unclassified'. Essentially that translates at being as thick as a plank (excuse pun), and possibly needing a bib, if anything woodwork is asked of me!

I really don't know what the 'Standard method of Measurement' is vis-à-vis timber, so can't answer.*

* - I worked on and off in my uncles timber yard in Birmingham in my youth. It was a timber yard that dealt to the building trade, and not to people who were DIY'ers, so to speak. Most orders were long flat bed truck size, up to HGV size deliveries. Anyway, I was in the office early into my first 'session' of working there, when a DIY'er came in and asked for a single piece of wood. At that very moment in time a contractor arrived with a large lorry, which he wanted filling with a complete load of timber. So, even though the DIY'er was next in the queue, everybody else dashed out to serve the 'heavy hitter'. I went outside and said something along the lines of 'But this bloke (the DIY'er) was next to be served'. I was then told a line which I will never ever forget. The line was 'Forget him, he's only come in for a c**t full'!
