Right now, there's only Cat Stevens and Elton that are "non negotiables" for me since both are acts I'm excited to see and are acts that I'm unlikely to see again.

My wife is also probably most excited for Stevens, she's been a fan for most of her life and didn't think she'd ever be able to see him live.

No. Wasn't familiar with him, and after listening to him, I don't think he's the vibe i'm aiming for over the weekend 🚫😾

the production on tea for the tillerman makes most people melt its the best production i know of on an album that old.

I'd be happy to sit at home and listen to him with a cup of tea. But it's not what I'm going to Glastonbury for. I don't dislike him by any means. Will give that one a go 👍

I'm definitely going to be there. But I am conflicted by his support for the fatwa on Salman Rushdie, even though he later said he was 'kind of joking' and would accept the decision of the UK courts. I mean, I know this is music.. and there are myriads of flawed artists if you start to look into it.. so I suppose that's where I stop.. and just enjoy his incredible music.

what makes you say that? not expecting his live performance to be up to scratch anymore, or general crowd / atmosphere / sound mix?

my experience of being in the field for macca last year.

I'm a 'depends' because I always love taking an hour or two out during legend slot time to visit that food stall that had mad queues the rest of the time, or to have a decent sit down and recharge, or just watch an act in relative peace for a while? It's usually when I refuel for the final bit. But I'd love to see the guy, so I might take the temperature of it on the day, see how I feel then.

Absolutely not. Terrible booking for a 'legends' spot. Let's be honest, how many people actually know any of his songs? He will come on to a huge reception, play a song people half know and it will be downhill from the first song. He'll then proceed to play an hour of songs to send most of the crowd asleep and then the big finish with Peace Train (which again how many people actually know). Forget that rubbish. I'll be over at Avalon watching The Proclaimers with a cider!

.. or maybe after that first song, people will be hooked and will leave at the end having seen one of the great artists performing at the best festival. I bet you would have said the same thing about Leonard Cohen.

I think much of the debate centres on how you define legend. And, as always, those definitions are determined by which side of the Atlantic you’re on.

Oxford English Dictionary
an extremely famous person, especially in a particular field.

Merriam Webster
a person that inspires legends

It seems to me the British definition is far more based on their own merit, on their own expertise. With the emphasis on their field, the legend status comes from them. The American definition implies an element of mythologising and that status is bestowed upon 'the legend' by a third party.

One definition possibly sees a Kylie fit the narrative, the other definition maybe a little more Cat

Ah come on… who doesn’t like partying to ‘Morning has broken!’.

None of that's particularly relevant here, though.

For years the festival didn't use the term and called it the Teatime Slot as it's for the sort of adult-oriented MOR music that could accompany afternoon tea.

Using this definition the Catster definitely fits the bill, and is totally in keeping with the original vibe of the slot.

In recent years it's kept the unfashionable Radio 2 elements - it's just evolved a into an almighty party - and that's where Yusuf will probably fall a bit short.

Yes, more a ‘guilty pleasure’ than a ‘tribute to excellence’.

You seem to be making the assumption that people are just gonna turn up to Cat Stevens’ set having not checked him out beforehand and with no prior knowledge of his music just expecting a huge party because he’s playing the legend slot… but that’s obviously not going to be the case (for the most part - never doubt the stupidity of some people).

I can understand people being a little disappointed that this years legend doesn’t follow in the footsteps of the previous massive crowd bringing banger fests, but there will still be tons of those kind of acts across the weekend regardless, and I’m sure the people who do go watch Cat will enjoy him thoroughly as he’s released some classic songs and albums, and the people who want a big dance and singalong can go elsewhere for that hour and fifteen.

I think it’ll be looked back on in the same way as ELO or Paul Simon, but it’s no big deal. We’ve run out of fun legends for now!

You can't complain about the output of a man with guitar and  then say you'll watch men with guitars instead.

Lots of people said they'd find Rod to be that fun legend but I've seen him, he's no fun.
