Love the farm , Leave no Trace

It’s a beautiful Easter Sunday , balances paid and pledge signed . In 70 odd days we will all be on the farm , cider in hand with the worries of the world lifted for at least a few days . Last year was a fantastic effort by all in terms of removal of stuff but we can do better . So when at a main stage don’t put your rubbish on the ground while watching an act carry a bin bag and pick up a few bits of rubbish while you wait and the farm will stay beautiful .

I’ll second that, also food waste, cans etc left lying around makes walking through a crowd in the dark a bit of a minefield. Doesn’t take much effort to use the wonderfully painted bins.

just take them to the bins on the way out the field .... if you've got a bin bag in your pocket you can use it over and over during the festival ... pretty simple concept really 🙂

Nearly two years ago I was stewarding at Shambino (mini Shambala), one evening I looked over the main area, no rubbish. Last year at Shambala I saw two litter pickers have a joke fight over the one bit of rubbish in the craft field.

It's possible folks.

Momentum building … the more people that leave it clean the more others won’t want to be that one that does it .

Yep, if you can carry a plate of food and a can of beer into a field, you can carry the empties back to a bin.

Agree with all of the above, but the festival needs to help by making sure the bins are emptied regularly. Last year, so many of the bins were overflowing, the excess was being kicked around as people walked over it.

I guess they have to balance it all with minimising vehicle movements . Maybe they could attach some bags to the bins in some way so at least it stays in one place in some of the busier areas .. particularly pyramid arena where I’ve seen it

I always carry little pedal bin liners (sad I know 🤣) and if we eat at a stage area, we stick all our rubbish in, tie it up and dump it in the nearest bin when we move - not hard.  Lots of dumped food trays etc at the Pyramid last year and don’t get me started on NOS canisters 🙄

I did a couple of years with the Worthy Warriors, encouraging those on Big Ground to leave no trace, we made good progress. It can be done.

This needs to happen at West Holts. By far the worst for litter. It is so bad my husband hates going there. He gets really upset watching people just drop litter on the ground. Mind you who doesn't! I end up picking up bits and putting by the bins

That could work. Or maybe replace the bins with mini skips so they will be less likely to become full.

Shambala last year was phenomenally clean and tidy, with almost no rubbish on the ground, yet the crowd is fairly wild and hedonistic too. So yes, it's completely possible. And wonderful.

Or have empty bins "backstage" (potentially behind traders, not the actual stage) that are swapped out.

I've been thinking about the skip idea for years - yes the current bins are pretty, but they simply get too full too quickly. In many places, it doesn't work and hasn't for years.

That strip of food stalls on the left in the Park as you're walking up the hill is another. Always overflowing, every bloody year. A consistent failure on the festival's part.

Hate walking in a crowd in the dark and slipping on a half eaten discarded pizza or getting a crushed beer can stuck on my boot! Just use the bins or carry a waste bag with you until you find a bin. Maybe we do need more bins or get them emptied on a more regular basis but that doesn’t excuse just chucking everything down.

Anyone who drops litter anywhere is a class A goober, can't understand no matter how drunk/mashed you are, why anyone thinks it's okay. I got the shakes just leaving behind a binbag full of cans, as I packed up my tent one year, next to the bins because they were full and I didn't have the energy to drop it off in an empty bin somewhere else.

Like these cretins in 2019. Top of Michaels Mead. The bins are about 20 feet away behind the fence.

I think skips are a great idea and it needs to be done. Possibly wouldn't take up any more space than the amount of litter overflowing from the bins.

West holts on the weds / thurs is horrendous. People leave their 4 pint carriers for brothers everywhere and their food the same. Its so sad, how can you enjoy yourself sat in your own filth and indeed everyone elses? Use the bins!!

as an aside its really about time the single use paper pint cups were done away with. But the practical solution is always subject to loads of discussion on here. Plastic cups with return deposit or similar should be the norm and are at basically every medium size fest but theyre each about 10-20% the size of glasto
