williams green ... carhenge

I'm sure there is a thread dealing with contentious issues but I couldn't easily locate it.

If Joe Rush's latest idea is repeating Carhenge from years ago, maybe it's time for him to move over for someone with some new ideas.

Snapped Ankles is a great example. Black Midi and Fontaines DC have gone on to bigger things and stages and good for them, but someone like Snapped Ankles are of a certain level and are niche will stay niche. If you're not seeing them at Williams Green, you're probably not seeing them at Glastonbury.

OK, I'll bite.

These snapped ankles?

uh, yep. those are the ones. they played in 2019. Was a good gig.

not really sure your point tbh, but mine was: with the loss of Williams Green , these kind of bands no longer have an obvious place at Glastonbury. Or certainly there are less options for them.

Without trying to upset anyone, I’ve seen the on end car pics and I’m bored already. Skip’s obviously ITK and I trust him when he says there will be more than just on end cars there but I’ll miss the venue and the decent upcoming bands they put on at sensible times, FDC, Snapped Ankles, Black Midi etc.

The fact there's music on at CarHenge isn't a secret, it's on the website.

They obviously saw the dwindling numbers over the weekend during the day at WG and realised that most ppl were bored with the tent as well, unfortunately.

For me it's like when they stopped booking mega acts for WH a few festivals a go. The effort to audience ratio just didn't add up or make it a sensible choice going forward.

Also, the suggestions that the festival should pander to the TikTokers of this world, it's simply ridiculous. Why not go the whole slog and invite TikTok to set up a tent at WG and be one step closer to Coachella.

Secondly, the oversimplification of a giant sculpture/art installation auditorium into > "its just some cars stacked on top of each other", or "fans of horizontal cars can now see vertical cars", just sounds so reductionist.

You could literally say that about anything.

"Oh, Arcadia, it's just a spider - not even got 8 legs. Takes me 5 seconds to see it and move on"

"Oh, Stonebridge. Just a tent, isn't it?"

"Oh the Ribbon Tower, just a spiral bloody staircase. 5 seconds and done"

"Oh, the Pyramid. It's just a giant tent-shaped stage. 2 seconds and I'm tired of it"

Jeeeezuusss.

People keep asking for more art and interesting areas. Well, CarHenge is gonna be one of those. With music to boot!

Do they?

Everyone I know is there for music, it's cool that there's lots of mushrooms around green fields, and a walk through the T&C area gives me all the art I need.

I wouldn't go to Glastonbury without the music, but I would without the art. (I realise both make it, but for me only one is crucial)

What is this even in reference to?

The whole setting is what makes Glastonbury interesting. Without the art, circus, performance etc it would be nothing more than a big outdoor gig.

I that were the case I probably wouldn't bother.

Well, yeah obviously, if you took away all the music, the place would be a dead silent ghost town.

But, if they took all the art away, it'd be a lot less cool/atmospheric/arty/bespoke etc, and just turn into a Reading or a V-Festival.

A lot of people are hankering for a lot more art and bespoke venues in the SEC. The Park is a wonderful blend of art and music - one of the favourite places over the weekend. And the reception to Woodsies morphing into its own bespoke area was also massively well received - something which people had also been requesting or suggesting.

All I'm saying, let's give it a chance before we've even got there.

There’s plenty of other festivals which are just music. I have confidence in Glasto curating their usual melting pot of music, performing arts, art and party. They’ve got a good track record!

Wait I'm confused. Am I the old man yelling at a cloud because I don't want to pander to TikTokers?

Someone a few pages back suggested the new CarHenge would go down badly because young people have mobiles and TikTok to look at and would be bored with the installation. Read to me as, GFL should pander to people who scroll on TikTok and do something to suit them.

Not sure what would appeal to "young" people or people who like TikTok. Maybe giant interactive iPads between the cars showing everyone how to dance on the spot for a thirty second video? Lol.

But then if people don't like CarHenge, what else don't they like? The big rainbow man on the hill? The Ribbon Tower? The Sandalism (not sure if that's still there) sculpture that changes everyday? The wicker devil? The mutoid waste cars? Arcadia? The whole of the Theatre & Circus field?

Yes

Let's reference an entire generation by a social media platform I don't like. Very much old man yells at clouds vibes.

As far as I can tell from this thread;

WG - People upset that one of the best alternative music stages has gone and not been replaced / bands moved to other areas.

Carhenge - the best people can muster is "let's give it a chance"

Also if people think that art installations at a festival are somehow unique to Glastonbury I think you need to try more festivals.

The main defining feature of Glastonbury for me is the lack of barriers. Camping on site and music that continues all night.

Most other festivals these days have theatre and circus acts, installations etc.

Hopefully you can see from the others who've responded to you that there's a range of views and plenty of us think quite differently.

I'm happy to accept that often they need to change things for whatever reason and am happy to wait and see it for myself.

As others have said, there's plenty of alternative music stages. Strummerville, BBC Int., Woodsies, Park, Truth... I think you'll be fine if indie/rock is your jam.

I mean, it's equally generalising to say that people won't like CarHenge just because they have smartphones and TikTok. And tbh, I don't like TikTok. For me it represents a throwaway culture of 20 second entertainment - something Glastonbury is against with all it's anti-commercialist, anti-materialist iconography.

Sorry, not trying to keep going on, but we literally do have to give it a chance, because none of us have been there and experienced it yet. To talk so absolutely about something without experiencing it is pretty pointless.

I'm feeling pretty positive about it. I like the idea of a huge art installation with performers and music. It'll cater for a lot of happy campers I'm sure.

I'll also go see it, and as said I don't really have anything against carhenge, but I did really like WG. I'd take more WG and less carhenge any day of the week.

In reality, if carhenge had been located at cinearmageddon, do you think many people would venture out to see it?

Anyway we can go round in circles all day. In my opinion losing music for an art installation is bad, that's all.

I'm curious, why is Carhenge being blamed for the demise of William's Green? I thought it was accepted that the WG music venue was dropped for budget reasons and this would have happened regardless of whether Carhenge was introduced. There would only have been a bar and food stalls in the WG field. But now we get a bar, food stalls AND an art installation with performance art.

Slightly tongue in cheek there.

Yep. I am mourning the loss of WG as much as everyone else but to have it replaced with carhenge is better than nothing if it had to go regardless.
