Ah, the pre-Brexit, pre-Trump, pre-Covid age. Like a different era, honestly.

Agree.

"Only" 10 years ago and it almost looks like a different festival.

as someone who has only been since 2019, would love to hear what has changed

I can see a change from the 90s festivals to now but I don’t think it’s changed massively since 2013 tbh.. what do you think is different?

Number one thing is the numbers of people, which has had a massive impact

Number two - the overall type of people attending

I'd love to hear this haha.

What on earth has Brexit, Trump and COVID got to do with the 'type' of people that attend LOL

1. Are the numbers attending effected by Donald Trump?

2. Are the 'type' of people attending different due to Brexit?

I haven't been since 2019.

Out of interest how is it different?

I'm in the same boat 😄  I think the festival is always evolving - I get the impression it will be a busier, in part due to a few thousand more people and in part due to people stampeding from one set to the next (last year due to dry weather / people forgetting how much a festival takes it out of them), so more people constantly on the move seems busier.  I think as drug-de-jour changes over time then that changes the vibe too.  Looking forward to seeing if I notice any difference whatsoever!

I had a gap between 2013 and 2019 when I didn’t attend , I didn’t feel the festival was any different when I returned and it seemed the same last year.  I’ll be interested to hear from the rest of our crew this year who haven’t been since 2013.

Overall I think the type of people attending hasn’t changed that much.. there’s more off site campers but what kind of percentage is that? Has anyone ever seen figures, I’d be interested to know.  I don’t think it’s been overrun with influencers… I just see a load of people enjoying themselves as they always have for the most part.  It’s definitely not as wild as the 90s but since the super fence went up I don’t feel like there’s been a huge change.

Absolutely nothing. They just like to whine about it at every single opportunity.

Some of my friends have been going as long as me (since 2004)  but take occasional breaks from going, the only thing they ever comment on is it getting bigger....I will say that for me, post Jay-Z in 2008 I noticed that the the 'clientele' got a lot more 'mainstream' rather than mostly people who were into guitar bands.

I've never considered the 'clientele' to be mostly people into guitar bands, certainly doesn't apply to my mates who go. This IMO is a very Noel opinion.

But totally agree that the 'clientele'  has got a lot more mainstream and controversially more white and more "middle class". *

* It's a long time since I got a downvote.

Personally, I've noticed that as I've gotten older, there's more people younger than me around, having fun with loads of energy and reminding me of the constant passage of time.

Drug trends have changed a bit  as well with cocaine use being more prevalent over the last decade so have noticed that crowds have been more bargy and selfish than previous fests.

Generally I put this down to just getting older and in the case of last year being the first post covid glasto - people just not being used to being in a massive festival and not dealing with crowds as well as previous years

Cocaine use is rampant across society in the UK, gigs, down the pub on a Friday night, football, music festivals etc....so easy to get hold of compared to 15-20 years ago.

The great/terrible (delete as appropriate) thing is that price has remained relatively stable but quality has steadily improved in that time as well so not only is it easier to get hold of, it's better quality.

It goes some way to explain how there were complaints of crowds not being the most friendly at times as cocaine rarely brings out altruism in people and where there's cocaine use, heavy drinking usually follows.

It's a shame that mushrooms hasn't experienced the same renaissance as they are very pleasant, if confused and giggly, crowds to navigate.

I'm positive that some people would look at me and judge me as being 'not a good old fashioned glastonbury go-er.' I like to take my time getting ready in the mornings, wearing sequins and colourful outfits and different hairstyles and make-up that I wouldn't normally wear in the capitalist world.  It's my way of feeling energised ready to dance a marathon. I'm going to match with my daughter this year and put coloured bits in our hair and all sorts. I see it as my opportunity to express myself as much as it is the artists who are on stage or everywhere else. (And, derrrr I'm going to make sure I get a nice picture of course...)

But...that doesn't mean I'm afraid of a bit of mud and a long drop! I still throw myself into the team effort and I've always found that almost everyone else does too, so I really dont understand the "people have changed blah de blah" mentality. I think usually if you're not enjoying something it's a 'you' thing and not everyone else. The only people I judge who ruin the vibe are the chair numpties in the pit moaning at everyone for stomping past them...

Festival still has the same old spirit that my mum and dad talked about in my experience. But then, I do always seek out the alternative stuff so maybe that's where it can be found

I totally approve of this type of behavior as long as it's done with style.

Plenty of "old school" crew types do similar, they just try to make it look like they haven't spent anytime getting their look.

You're right, SE corner, esp Undle Ground, Rimski's Yard, Strummer Ville etc

I reckon your taking time in the morning maybe different reasons  although Skip I love to think it is about getting different hairstyles each day for you 😀

So true.

there's more that unites us than divides us
