Well usually headliners play something bigger than Brixton Academy as their own single gig before getting a Glastonbury headline spot. Wireless was a day filled with other bands in his own town and Dj Khaled or J Cole aren't topping Glastonbury are they.

If new people don’t headline then Glastonbury are going to really struggle in a few years when all the oldies have died off.  Coldplay, AM, Radiohead, The Cure aren’t going to keep going forever. 
 

Mumfords, Ed, Stormzy, Sza, Dua (and many more in the past) were given shots, some got bigger and some will probably peek at that but it’s about 1.  Giving the opportunities and 2.  The need to as lots of the bigger acts are doing their own thing nowadays more than ever

Arctics you are right about. They had festivals around including Reading in subs spots and they just blew up quicker than anyone. But we are going back 17 years to where thing were a little different. 02 arena was only just built lol

Kinda. Might be worth thinking what The Strokes had done before the summer of 2002 though. Them and Coldplay were bands in the same boat. Except Coldplay were actually about to release their second album.

 

Strokes follow up was over a year away.

There is a known reason for that though. Strokes were due to play Pilton party 2001, pulled out near the date for unspecified reasons and Coldplay stepped up (and flew from Paris) to play.

Yeah I'm aware of the back story, still disappointing though.

 

Definitely right, re the $$. I'd kill for them to properly tour here but I doubt that's happening now.

I think Coldplay played Glastonbury before their first headline slot if I'm not mistaken.

 

AM going straight in as Pyramid bill-toppers was pretty wild. And apparently something that even caught themselves out for how much of a big deal that was, given they have since said their 2013 date went better than their 2007 one.

Yeah it's a funny one. I kinda feel like the festival would get over the original reason if there was a place for them to play for the right fee. I think that is the main issue. They probably aren't really pyramid headliners but they would want that kind of money. 

They feel like other stage headliners now.

I mean maybe if they continue to stick around and release albums they aren't far off heritage act? They only play 1 or 2 gigs in the UK every few years so they don't oversaturate the market. 

Stranger things have happened so for me it's still in the "maybe one day" if there's the right set of circumstances.

The Stokes are, dare I say it, a touch too unreliable as a live prospect in the current day and age.
