I'm 44 and find my music has massively diversified as I've got older. I'm really into this pop revolution in the same way I've recently enjoyed Mastodon. I think O'rod has some great tunes and most of the acts I've seen live put on a great show. I thought Dua Lipa was great headlining last year and Janelle Monae was even better (although not a headline act).

 

If anything, after years and years of festivals booking the same bands again and again its a refreshing change and a chance to see something new.

Live Rock music isn't really like Pop music. There's way more opportunities for jamming and being a bit different with songs. 

 

Dua Lipa's performance sounded like her songs on the radio. It was bland and dull but again that's why we all have different opinions isn't it?

I'm fairly sure her UK tour wasn't full of 44 year olds was it? Most of them who were with there with younger children I'd imagine. That was my point. 

 

I don't really have anything against her and my 10 year old son and wife are actually going to the rescheduled Manchester gig on the Monday as it happens. I just don't think I could sit through a 2 hour gig of hers so I'm not going. Hahaha.

It’s far more fun than middle aged blokes going through the motions, playing dull formulaic rock music which should have died out about 30 years ago

I'm sure you are correct in that O'rods tour was not full of 44 year old people...in the same way that when Metallica headlined, i am sure Metallicas previous concerts weren't packed out at the front full of people with daisy chains in their hair, waving peace flags who attend private schools but hey,

A bit of everything is the answer, which  -  is what you're gonna get at most major festivals these days. The good thing is that with that mix, there's no real need to moan about either genre as you can go and see what you enjoy and don't watch what you don't enjoy,

To be honest here, by not actually being open in general to pop music you're naturally going to be against the idea of it.

 

For me, im a case of if I like it I do and that could be anything and I dont care where it came from. It could be reality tv, a pop show on tv etc etc. End of the day a rock band that made it or a rapper etc needed their music to be heard, liked and taken on my someone to put them where they are. 

 

I like a lot of pop music and ive never been oh no like you can't like sh*t because it came from pop idol or something but because this came from the voice it's better blah blah. Sometimes a bit of fun cheese is a nice vibe I reckon and mixes it up.

I'd agree there's room for anything that will draw an audience. I'm certainly not going to suggest a bona-fide headliner should sub.

 

It's just the age thing getting brought up. I think some might be surprised by the wide range of pop music fans. Might not be wide ranging at their own  gigs, but at festivals I've been part of very mixed audiences.

She's definitely a headliner from a size perspective but I think she's got some winning over to do for some of the crowd, its not like Dua Lipa where 10+ songs are deep in the public consciousness.

I've said it before she's very much at the same level as Billie Eilish when she headlined. Flavour of the month and in demand.

This is true, if I'd have been there in 22 I wouldn't be as bothered as she will be a one and done. Dua Lipa tour however I'm going to look on twickets

Olivia Rodrigo is great - from a 43 old who took his daughter, seen her at Glasto and will be seeing her at Rock Werchter (plus trying to take my daughter to BST)

We saw O-Rod in 2022 on The Other stage and she was much better than we’d expected, though whole staging and band felt very manufactured. Haven’t ever chosen to put her music on since, though enjoy it when I catch it on the radio. I’m happy if she’s headlining, but definitely feel like I might be drawn away elsewhere this time depending on who else is on. But that’s the whole joy of Glastonbury isn’t it? You can pick and choose. If we all wanted to see the headliners it would be like Elton John busy every time.

Plus I would reiterate that the balance Emily has to manage is that of both the festival's sustainability going forward with their industry role as being a festival that can afford to take a few chances and build the environment that they want to be a part of as they sell out before line-up.

I love having a Pyramid headliner that suits me to watch, but I don't get too hung up on it. Swings and roundabouts

 

McCartney 2022 and AM 2023 was a dream for me, can't have it your own way every year. Enjoyed Coldplay last year (well, the first half of it). Anticipating a year away from the Pyramid headline slots this year. I've been so lucky over the years, when I look back.

 

There's also been plenty of huge acts I have no interest in - Adele, Muse, Stormzy, Kanye, Sheeran, Dua Lipa, but to name a few. Clear that they are more than deserving of those slots - just don't suit my tastes.

 

We're blessed with the size of the place, and the range of acts/genre/diversity.

 

It is very easy to get hung up on headliners. I still sometimes fall into the trap myself.

I think having a headliner like O-Rod is where the festival should be.  Feels like the right headliner at the the right time.  It isn't going to be for everyone but that is fine.

I thought she was really good on the Other stage.  I agree that she has got more cross over songs that the general public will know than SZA and probably similar to Billie Eilish, much much fewer than Dua Lipa though. 

 

If I'm lucky enough to get a ticket then I will be there because I think it will be good fun (unless she clashes with Biffy)

Love a big headiner on the Pyramid me .... dont get the chance to see so many big acts like that because of affordability these days ... id happily do all 3 if they suited never have though

Are we not allowed Olivia Rodrigo & Muse? Perfect timing for Olivia to step up and she is massive. Muse a heritage act that would get a massive crowd and more of a safe booking on the Sunday than SZA. I could see a trio of Fred/Fender, Olivia Rodrigo & Muse.

Thats fair comment, though she has had 4 number 1s and another 4 singles in the Top 10. So it’s not a SZA situation. 
 

Just feels like right place and time to me, though I should declare that as a 47-year-old

man I think she’s great. Saw her in Glasgow this year and it was superb.

Remember as well wasn’t she the only person barring the headliners/legend to get a live airing on TV (BBC1 prime spot too if I remember).  She’s defo more than big enough and well known enough to smash it.

Muse really not done much (successfully) and got smaller since last playing. Maybe a few more years
