Elton on the final run was headliner or nothing. Agree. I can almost understand the view that Elton would have been legend slot worthy if you'd had your head in the sand for the last 10 years. There was a time in recent memory that if Elton had headlined people would have been outraged. A few things changed that - Yellow Brick Road anniversary, his farewell tour, collaborations with younger artists. I would argue, however, that his body of work is still due a wider re-evaluation - people still mainly care about the hits.
Beerqueen
If the headliners are Neil Young, 1975 and O Rod, there is a fair chance I won't be seeing a Pyramid headliner. I like the idea of Neil Young and his songs are good but having listened to him again, I do find his voice a bit screechy. I don't dislike either 1975 nor O Rod but neither am I particularly bothered by them. I may be at any, either if I'm at a loose end or if I suddenly take to them in the next 6 months or I may be at none. But after recent crushes at headliner sets, I'm not sorry if I'm not in one this year. (hey, it's good to say "this year" isn't it?)

Physical_graffiti
Elton and NY are obviously headliners because they are massive and legends and you are on glue if you think otherwise. 1975 (my own music taste aside) and Olivia Rodrigo are headliners because they are big enough to do it, albeit on the 'smaller end' of headliners such as Mumford and Sons, Arcade Fire, Florence, Stormzy etc who were also big enough. The three biggest acts that Glastonbury can book in any given year are your three headliners. I mean even poor SZA was the third biggest act they could book in 2024, you can't just leave the slot blank. If you're glasto and you don't think NY is a headliner so you dont book him or try to book him further down the bill (lol), you are by definition booking someone smaller than Neil Young to take his place, therefore making the festival worse.

Elton, of course, was the guest star in Bob's earliest Christmas special, A Christmas to Remember, where he played a member of a local band forced to front up late in the day with - you guessed it - Crocodile Rock. I checked out Rudimental as the other headliners were, for me, dreadful. I was prepared to abandon WH and head to the SE corner, but as it turned out Rudimental we’re great. Without exception every one I know who went to Elton out of curiosity, or believed the rumours of an Eminem/Brittney appearance, or just wanted to look at the huge crowd, said he was dreadful. Including one of my best friends daughters who left early, passed WH on the way back, and said to me on the following morning “I really wish I’d gone to Rudimental instead”.

Elton's set was one for the history books. By every metric it was a success. I do have one question though - why do you think NY, Elton and Macca are legend slot bookings but Kraftwerk should be headliners?
jjgnorkett
Elton was a great party at the pyramid but I was glad he played most of the songs I wanted to hear in the first half of the set. I managed to catch all of Crocodile Rock making my way through the crowd to get to QOTSA. My only regret was not leaving earlier to catch more QOTSA but that's more to do with how good they were rather than a knock on Elton. No way the crowd will be anywhere near as busy (thankfully) for Neil Young but I would fancy him to outperform Elton from a musical perspective based on how well they've aged. Tad biased here though as NY in my number one guy haha Edited 20 hours ago by jjgnorkett punctuation

Happy to admit this is a personal choice, but also it would be (for me) much more of a party. Plus Kraftwerk would be so much better in the dark, NY, Macca and Elton - doesn’t matter

Again this is information from someone I’ve known a long time and trust. FWIW I believe there will have been a fair number of folk leaving. But that's going to be true of every single act, particularly at headline time. Folk will peel off for all sorts of reason, often entirely unrelated to what's happening onstage. No one has 100% crowd retention, and the bigger the crowd in the first place the more folk who will eventually saunter off.

Problem is there's no real evidence that it happened at a high percentage - just about every Pyramid headliner has a "smaller" crowd at the end than they did at the start. There certainly wasn't a Radiohead-esque exodus. No idea what the exact numbers were on that but I can certainly say with confidence that the field was still ridiculously full at the end, and took forever to get out of. My gut feeling is that in percentage terms any drop-off would have been lower than average.
