Question for those in the know of the state of modern rock music:

Are there acts coming through that will shoot to be headliners, that will be the legacy headliners?

I don't mean acts like BMTH and Catfish, Kasabian, Biffy Clyro, Queens of the Stone Age, Fallout Boy, Kings of Leon, 21 Pilots who kind of just floated to the top with no opposition after 10-15 years active, but will never be the name that sells tickets.

Nor acts like Nothing But Thieves, Idles, Don Broco, Fontaines DC who will always drift around in the late afternoon spots.

Nor acts like Royal Blood, Yungblud, Wet Leg, Wolf Alice etc who are at their peak of zeitgeist, who will never be more in the public discussion, so will never go higher than what they get now.

I'm talking about your next act that will have us clamouring for tickets still in 20 years:

Linkin Park - Headed 2003, 2 years after breaking through.

Green Day - Headed 2004, the same year they broke through.

Foo Fighters - Headed 2002, 5 years after breaking through

Arctic Monkeys - 2009, 3 years after breaking through

Muse - 2006, 5 years after breaking through.

Oasis - 2000, 6 years after breaking through.

Crazy to put Fontaines who are on a massive rise right now in with NBT and Don Broco lol - they just sold out Finsbury. I doubt people will be clamouring for their tickets in 20 years but they definitely shouldn't be alongside those 3 acts quite yet!

I'd question Green Day breaking through in 2004 as well lol - Dookie came out in 1994, 10 years before that headline slot!

KOL arguably should be in that lower category (while they won't exactly have people clamouring), they got to headline in 2009 with their two big hits coming out in like 2006 or 07?

We'll have to see if Sam Fender sticks about, he's an obvious shout.

The 1975 got there in 6 years (could have been sooner too really!), no sign of them slowing down at present either.

Fontaines DC will headline the next time they play.

They would have been booked to next year had they not of played in 2024. Without a doubt

This is the sign that we are in an echo chamber and group polarisation is taking hold.

Bring Me The Horizon are just breaking through to HL status:

- 14 million Spotify listeners

- 7 studio albums with 600,000 UK sales (3x Silver, 2x Gold, 1x Platinum)

- 26x TOP 100 singles (8x TOP 40)

- 15x Silver, 1x Gold, 2x Platinum

Fontaines DC:

- 3 million Spotify listeners

- 4 studio albums with 280,000 UK sales (4x Silver)

- 4x TOP 100 singles, 0x TOP 40.

- No certifications at all, for any song.

Fontaines DC are not headlining Reading and Leeds unless they release some magical groundbreaking album which does absolutely bits.

Can someone explain why Fontaines have gotten so popular? Dogrel was decent but they don’t play the most engaging stuff, I genuinely don’t know why people are so drawn to them.

In the build up to the 2023 lineup release, Don Brocos name got bandied around so much that we convinced ourselves they were easily subbing size.

We were throwing out stats on album chart positions, arena tours, big name shows, how long they sell out tickets.

Then the lineup came out, they were 8th total on Sundays Main Stage.

We did it with BMTH for the 5 years before they headlined. Were going to do the same with Fontaines until they get booked 3rd down in 2027 and we get a little wakeup call.

2nd headline i think andre meant, its definitely what I did if they did this year / next year.

Don Broco never did anything the size of this Finsbury show (straight after 2 sold out ally pallys too).

Fontaines are clearly the real deal ticket sales wise. None of the third downs this year are doing shows the size that Fontaines are selling so well.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they're the same size, Fontaines are clearly bigger, I was more showing we as a specific demographic of live music and festival fans always escalate bands far higher than they are, often based on our own rose tinted experiences with them.

We're all questioning and grumbling at Central Cee. Central Cee is absolutely equivalent size to Dave commercially, and if Dave headlined MSE, Central Cee is insane booking for 2nd down.

- 0 Albums

- 37x TOP 100 singles

- 16x of those TOP 20

- 7x of them TOP 10

- 1x Number 1 single

- 9x Platinum, 2x Gold, 7x Silver

- 26 million Spotify listeners

- 3 billion streams for top 3 Spotify songs

Compare him to Dave:

- 2 Albums (both 1x Platinum)

- 40x TOP 100 singles

- 20x of those TOP 20

- 12x of those TOP 10

- 3x Number 1 singles

- 23x Platinum, 9x Gold, 20x Silver

- 14 million Spotify listeners

- 1.6 billion streams for TOP 3 Spotify songs

I was wondering where Fontaines are headed. Lots of youngsters going crazy for them on the current tour (but still lots of older folk so very cross-generational appeal). We spoke to a couple if teenagers who think they're the coolest act around and will be getting bigger. They might blow up very quickly, they might not. The kids will decide, I guess.

Don’t bother reading Chadderz’ Spotify listeners and chart positions chat. Just know that Fontaines DC have shifted a headliner number of tickets for the current tour and their outdoor shows next year. That is all a promoter sees and what they’re seeing is big bucks in Fontaines DC.

Their next album, they headline the Main Stage. Not as one of the 6, but as one of the 3 big draws. Mark my words.

Possibly a controversial take here and I may be completely off the mark, but if we are talking about strictly rock music, as Chad mentioned, then I really can’t see many bands that have formed in the last decade having the same longevity and ability to consistently headline major festivals as those that were formed over a decade ago. I don’t think pop music will struggle as much. I can see Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, Sabrina Carpenter, take your pick, consistently headlining major festivals in 20 years. I just can’t think of any bands from the last decade that will do the same. Fontaines D.C. may well headline in 2 years, but will they in 20?

As a teacher, they’re the one act that both myself and the boys I teach tend to enjoy.

Not often that a new guitar band manages to crack into the secondary school demographic. Most of the time my students prefer rappers and pop.

But they are both formed early 2000s in an age where rock music was still relatively mainstream. I appreciate their rise to prominence is pretty recent (and 75’s debut was what, 2013?) but it just feels different to the newer bands like Fontaines D.C.

But then the more I think, the more I’m starting to disagree with myself 🤣 Fender is about to do Glastonbury, has and is doing stadiums, Fontaines D.C. got Finsbury, so by all metrics you’d imagine they’d still be at the top in 20 years. Maybe I should just be quiet 🤐
