I had to ask ChatGPT:

MAIN STAGE
Arctic Monkeys > Sam Fender > Royal Blood > Beabadoobee > Turnstile > The Snuts

Billie Eilish > Dua Lipa > Wolf Alice > IDLES > Wet Leg > Runa Sawayama

Foo Fighters > BMTH > Paramore > Maneskin > Architects > Nova Twins

RI TENT
Kendrick Lamar > Little Simz > slowthai > Stormzy > Baby Keem

Florence > Lana Del Rey > Romy > Boygenius > Phoebe Bridgers

Post Malone > Central Cee > Aitch > AJ Tracey > Dave

CHEVRON
Fred Again, Bicep, Peggy Gou, The Blessed Madonna, Four Tet, Overmono, CamelPhat, Charlotte De Witte

FR
Black Midi, Yard Act, Fontaines DC, The Murder Capital, Wet Leg, Inhaler, Declan McKenna, Holly Humberstone

BBC INTRO
Lovejoy, CMAT, Maisie Peters, PinkPantheress, Joesef, Sam Ryder, The Reytons

This looks like the kind of lineip you would have had in 2008, when you look back and think that is stacked with around 50 headliners, but at the time they were all brand new upcomers.

Which sets up my question when the lineup is announced tonight, how many of those acts can go on to headline.

You're quoting these acts as if they're current and in the zeitgeist and they really aren't.

Complete non-sequitur, the discussion being that they were current 10, 20 years ago they were zeitgeist but it's a wild sway from what the festival is - an alternative music festival for indie and alternative rock and hip hop acts.

But screw it, let's get Central Cee to headline Download. He's very current and the kids love him.

Great, let's get Olly Murs, Blue, S Club 7, Robbie Williams headlining then, they fit your new market. Get with the times! Kid pop is in!

And yet I never mentioned gender, it was only the people trying to strawman the discussion. If prediction posters had Justin Timberlake and Justin Bieber headlining, I'd again say - Disney pop for pre-teens to dance around theit room, singing into their hairbrush.

It's ironic that your pop culture references are a decade, or more, out of date. If you want to convince people that you're not completely out of touch, that's probably not the best way of doing it.

Downloads very different, Reading has always platformed what was popular at the time wheras Download targets a specific audience. Cmon Chad, I dont think your a bad person but you dont help your reputation on here

"20 years ago these people wouldn't have headlined despite being huge at the time"

"You're naming people from 20 years ago, they aren't popular anymore"

What?

It's surreal to see you accuse other users of strawmanning your argument when you've just invented a quote out of thin air. Do you not see the hypocrisy?

4 years ago on this forum everyone sh*t the bed because all the acts were solo men with guitars, and there was no rock or indie, and that it was the death of the festival.

3 years ago Disclosure, Post Malone and Stormzy were named as headliners and everybody cried that it was turning into V festival with the mainstream radio pop bookings.

2 years ago we were overjoyed they had Rage and then cried when they replaced them with 1975.

Last year everyone bemoaned the festival was BBC Radio 2s future Sunday drive playlist.

This year we were ecstatic at such an insane lineup going back to the golden days with acts like Blink, LG doing the Oasis album in full, Fred Again..

But now we've all suddenly convinced ourselves that V fest pop is in now and we all need to see it. In the same thread where we're willing classic R&L acts like BMTH, Linkin Park etc to manifest.

I think the reason Justin Timberlake and Justin Bieber didn’t ever headline R&L 10-20 years ago was because their music was firmly situated in pop. Anyone into alternative music didn’t have a real interest in them. Contrast that to pop acts today (Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo, Chappell Roan, Billie Eilish) in a world where the genre pop has become more blurred. They all incorporate elements of alternative music into their pop music (be it pop punk, hip hop, rock), and you can see people who are into alternative music are now taking an interest into the new pop acts and actually want to see them. The death of V Festival may also play a part with R&L now able to fill some of that void so has expanded what it books. I honestly don’t understand your outrage Chad, times change.

FWIW I actually find the prospect of potentially being able to watch Chappell Roan and BMTH on the same day very appealing. Not many festivals in the UK could you do that. R&L’s strong point is being able to attract a whole variety of headliners and acts lower down the bill genre wise (even if I don’t listen to 70% of them).

15 years ago on this forum people were predicting Ting Tings and Scouting for Girls would headline. Tate Mcrae is featuring as a headliner on loads of prediction posters, but her music could have been released by Britney Spears 20 years ago.

Just 6 years ago on the forum, the consensus was that the festival shouldn't book just any zeitgeist popular acts because what's popular changes. They should book what's popular within their aesthetic which has been very specific for the last 50 years.

Non of that has any bearing on why I think Justin Timberlake and Justin Bieber never headlined, and why I think more recent pop acts will.

Except it hasn’t been very specific, at all.

1960s it was a jazz festival.

Early 1970s it was primarily a progressive rock, blues rock and hard rock festival.

Late 1970s/early 1980s it started to introduce punk rock and new wave acts.

Late 1980s saw the festival attempt a mainstream commercial pop direction.

Early 1990s the festival returned to primarily rock music, with grunge, bet pop and rap becoming popular acts booked.

Early 2000s saw a varied, predominantly rock lineup, but did book major metal & hip hop acts.

Mid 2000s to early 2010s focused on the new indie bands alongside stuff they booked in the early 2000s

It has never, in its history, had a very specific aesthetic lasting 50 years.

Wanted to join in the chat but busy day at work. If I get a lunch break I'll join in the fun but at this rate I'll be working till nine in the afternoon.

Only FR could see Panic! At The Disco booked for WWWY and go “if we chuck enough money at them, they’ll come back for us also”. Is this the start of the sh*t sandwich?!
