Ideally this country would grow up, get rid of the monarchy and all the empire related awards nonsense that comes with it, to be replaced by some new system to recognise the efforts of individuals etc.

Most countries have a way of r cognising good works. It's not really a monarchy thing.

 

Wonder if Michael will turn it down.i was once told by someone who knows Michael well that years ago he'd talked about the possibility of turning down an award of he was offered one

I disagree with the honours system in general, especially given how abused it has become under the current government, but if anyone deserves one for their service to the culture of this country, it is our favourite shorts wearing leader.

No. Recipients are approached well in advance and only after they accept are announcements made. Bowie turned one down apparently, but it was revealed years later.

Few people have been as culturally/charitably influential to this country over the past fifty plus years. Even if the award itself is uncomfortable for some, it's lovely to see the man's efforts be recognised at the highest level. Hope he rocks up in those denim hot pants.

I know they do it like that but it would be more fun to do a public snub. Thinking back I believe the talk of rejecting was if Blair had offered an honour. Michael wasn't keen on Blair cos of Iraq.

was probably ten years earlier he'd talked about turning one down from blair - in 2007 it  might have been brown not blair.

I'm firmly in the camp they should be scrapped and admire those that tell them to shove it.

However. He's as deserving as most and the festival of course does donate a lot to its chosen causes.

Well this is one of those rare situations where the knighthood is deserved. However the concept of knighthood has been sadly debased over recent years.

Often wondered if he'd been offered an upgrade to the CBE previously but had had the good grace to turn it down without gobbing off about it.

I'm sure I read somewhere that Tony Blair offered him a knighthood twice. Maybe wanted a Damehood?

Interesting that so many are against the honours system unless one has been awarded someone you like.

He has accepted it it otherwise it wouldn't have been announced. I am surprised he hasn't blabbed about it though.
