I remain doubtful that Trump's tariffs will be a big deal. The practicality of it and the obvious negative result for consumers make it a pointless exercise. It was a vapid campaign promise that hoodwinked a lot of voters. I think he'll have a few flagship tariffs, make a big noise about it and tell them it's been done, and hopefully the slowing inflation looks like a good result that he'll claim credit for. Voters complained about eggs and petrol. Eggs are not really imported to the US. Putting a tariff on importing oil would only hurt the US and is probably illegal under OPEC rules. The big stuff that the US imports from the UK are largely services rather than material goods, and putting tariffs on those would definitely hurt them. steviewevie
Apparently Starmer was the first calls to Trump, and he brought up the importance of stability in the middle east. Trump was probably wondering what the middle east is.

I half get why the farmers are pissed off - they want to pass their family businesses down to the next generation, etc, etc - but isn't that the case for all family owned businesses, not just farms? Also, the fact that we are talking about estates that are £2-3m makes me feel they have lost a bit of perspective. Either it's an argument against IHT altogether (though I'm sure they would support that too) or they pay the damn tax (or work out a way of passing it down early) - having a special rule for farms seems a bit crazy in the first place. steviewevie
No one likes paying more taxes, but taxes will probably have to go up because doesn't look like there will be enough growth in next four or five years to cover it and now we'll probably have to find more money for defence plus could be tariffs on goods to US and living standards not likely to be improving by next election...so looking likely Labour will get punished and we'll end up with populist right govt promising to cut taxes and reduce immigration and no more woke or net zero nonsense and gen z will be all over it. Starmer spending quite a bit of time abroad and absolutely should be by the way maybe there’s some hope of some closer trading ties … we absolutely need to be doing this with the potential difficulties In trade with the US to come …. While Lineker is good at his job, the real draw is the football. I don’t see many not watching a big international game or motd because they don’t like the presenter.
