The thing that sticks in the craw is RPI.

 

Its a weird thing to fix a loan to and puts the total interest rate similar to an unsecured consumer loan, however, unlike an unsecured consumer loan, the repayment of the loan is guaranteed through PAYE deductions for the vast majority graduates so the risk of non payment is limited to the risk of the student not earning enough to pay it off in full, so it’s not really unsecured, it’s secure in so far as it’s easy enough to model the proportion of students who will pay off and set the pricing accordingly, as they have. They also control whether or not thresholds rise, so can rig it if the forecast is wrong. That way they keep generating nice little loan portfolios each year to flog to investors.

 

Then the premium on RPI vs CPI in recent years is also caused by decades of failed housing policy, which incidentally also means that both students and graduates pay a kings ransom in rent.

I'm not sure how many people actually manage to pay it off nowadays? Aren't we now effectively in the position where graduates pay 9% extra in tax.

That Shadow cabinet is bonkers ... theyve moved on by putting out the same people as before ... only one name I dont recognise but Patel and Trott in those roles particularly bonkers given past history

If Goodwin doesn't like it she's probably doing a good job.

Jenrick as justice sec is pretty funny, but also she doesn't have many to choose from. Have to see how it goes, not she'll still be leader by next election.

my kid is probably going to university next year and I was reading that Martin Lewis was advising that probably better off getting a loan rather than paying it upfront, so that's good.

I have another 4 years before my daughter goes. Watching a Martin Lewis interview he seemed to think any negative impact would be offset by an increase in the maintenance loan.

Badenoch effectively saw the moderates coalescing around her when she got to the final 2 so it’s not a huge surprise. For all the red meat thrown by Badenoch to the base this is similar to what it would have looked like had the more moderate candidates won.

 

At least Jenrick didn’t win. While I doubt he is a genuine right winger, he would have required the true believers to keep him in place.

I guess theres so few left now choice is limited , thought they might have tried a few more less knowns though with fewer well known gaffs / misspeaks that would look to the electorate like the same old lot

I've decided I'm not watching the news or any politics until next year. I'm taking a tip from my work colleagues who didn't give a sh*t about the rapist winning today.

I guess lesson for Labour is if you don't deliver and people feel worse off, you get replaced by someone from the right who has more simple solutions.

Are we going to desperately try and get a deal with US so they don't include us in new tarrifs against EU goods, or is that a non starter and we're desperately going to try and get a better deal with EU?

This 100%. Farage could be our PM. 

But... It's weird to think but we will have another US election likely before we have another UK one. The US's 4 year experiment with unfettered populism will feed into the narrative that goes on over here.
