Flooding in Spain pretty under reported given the budget stuff dominating the headlines .... casualties sadly rising 😞 .....

I went to the Valencia area of Spain last year that this flooding has been disastrous for and think I even recognised some areas that have been devastated by the storms. It's just awful.

I'd actually forgotten the Cop29 thing is starting in Azerbaijan next week. Because private jet users congregating in an oil/gas-exporting nation is totally going to dig us out of the hole.

it's the best we got at moment, it's a global problem and needs everyone on board.

Having faith this will produce anything tangible might be easier said than done, and that was before the American decision and a couple of climate-sceptic parties getting into power in Europe. At the very least I'd believe we'd be making progress if we can finally convince the ultra-rich to kick having such a bad private jet addiction - not necessarily an outright ban, more just that they don't have to use it all the f**king time.

One thing I read this morning is that we were actually on track for worse. At present we're forecast for 3C above pre-industrial, widely seen as being a disaster, but apparently about 15-20 years ago, the data was suggesting 6C, which is basically an outright apocalypse. But it's also a disappointment that we're currently on track for not even a quarter of the 40%+ emission reductions believed to be required and voting for a lot of climate unfriendly parties just feels like some are already acting like that's job done.

Apparently we've been ungoing anticyclonic gloom for the past week. No sun or wind, 70% of electricity coming from nat gas with the rest nuclear and imports.

where did you get that from?

here:

https://grid.iamkate.com/

Down to 56% currently as high as 68% earlier in the week. Normal is about 25- 30%.

Hopefully Ed's got it sorted for times like these when we go 100% net zero.

Yep we need 100GW of energy from "somewhere" outside of wind/solar to cover times like now to meet the governments 2030/2035 net zero targets

or we keep investing in new tech and investing in new and more efficient renewable sources as well as storage plus small nuclear sites and still connect to a global grid and yes still have gas/oil as back up. Ultimately apart from the last week with your anticyclonic blah blah our overall use of energy from fossil fuels is reducing and this will continue.

Because if we don't we're f**ked.

Time to design and innovate solutions to that problem, which is happening

Even then, I feel like one of the great frustrations of us as a species is that we have still yet to create a winning alternative to oil and gas, especially for planes and boats. Maybe that's the holy grail of our time that we'll still be spending forever and a day trying to find.

Isn't aviation just a small part of it at moment?...a lot of flights but still most people don't fly regularly.

Every little helps. Plus those addicted to private jets are very much not helping.

I'm aware more will be needed than just that, but it's a step in the right direction. Finding viable alternatives to oil-based plastic and clothing fibre/dyes and more sustainable farming methods will also be necessities.
